What are Counsil Houses and Gangs in Britain like?

I am travelling to London in May. To be safe, Brits are telling me to avoid counsil houses and gangs. I don't know what a cousil house look like but I am assuming it is like the Projects in NYC. I have no idea what a Britsh gang member looks like but I assume they don't resemble the gang bangers we have in Brooklyn (or maybe they do?). Can anyone fill me in on this?

I live in a council house. I'm not in a gang or unemployed or a criminal. What are projects? If London is so shitty I suggest you stay at home.

Council houses come in many forms in London, not all council tenants live in flats. Many of the old victorian mansion blocks are now council owned.
British gang members?? I personally don't think such a thing exists and I've been living in London my whole life. There are a couple of young boys that are prepared to shoot each other, but it is still relatively rare. The media are representing this issue as a bigger problem than it actually is.

Stay away from areas such as peckham, lewisham and tower hamlets and you should be fine.

My council estate where I live is full of nice middle class students, because the original occupants bought their council houses and sold them and moved to the suburbs!
Just like any city, keep your common sense about you and you'll be fine.

Hi Pam....

"Wherever you go there are good and bad places, but 'av lived in GREAT Britain all me life and ain't ever seen a gang or bin mugged walkin' fru a council estate!"

But then again I have never been to Harrods either....lol

Please don't worry...there are lot's of lovely people here whom aren't out to hurt or harm you!

Have a safe journey, and 'welcome' when you get here (to multi-cultural, bitter and twisted England)! LOL

Hope you enjoy the British hospitality X

Gangs in the UK are tame. They dress in a tribal manner so are easy to spot.

Tourists never find council estates. Council estates consist of State subsidised housing and are usually put on the oytskirts of cities so that the inhabitants cannot easily.
get into town.

One of the best examples is Easterhouse to the west of Glasgow.

English people are so politically correct that they will never say 'watch out for blacks'.
I would. I don't mean the folks dressed in business suits. I mean those dressed in tribal costume (No! not leopard skins: hoodies and baggy trousers)

Keep clear of black areas in London and especially Manchester.

Anyway, as a tourist, you are totally safe if you keep to the well-beaten track.

I remember a tale of an American who asked a hotel porter in Glasgow for the dircections to a really tough, rough bar. He went and spent his holiday in hospital.

Have a great vacation. The UK is still one of the safest countries in the world for visitors.

It depends on where the council houses are. The south London ones are notorious for being ASBOs(anti-social behaviours) although i am not eliminating any council flats/houses wherever they are. the gangs could be tricky but I usually run a mile away from girls/boys that are in groups and they are wearing hoods(we call them hoodies). You know when they are in a pack, they are like wolves. Just be aware of your safety all the time as they can spring out of nowhere.(bring some stiletto shoes, its a feasible weapon!)

Darren C
In all honesty, if you are doing the usual tourist attractions you will not come across any gangs. You'll be spending your time in the West End and places like that.
The recent gang-related shootings happen in Brixton and Tottenham - usually in the evenings but it's highly unlikely you will go anywhere near these areas (they are a good few miles out of the centre of town)
Welcome!!!
