Looks like you have answers that reflect the current 'British' psyche. We are all rather down at the moment due to the current world financial situation.
To be honest, US citizens are generally not liked due to their poor understanding and interpreting of our language, lack of manners, lack of world knowledge and general bad attitude, add to that the current Middle East conflicts that your former President dragged us into, and the current financial crisis being partly down to the deregulated US banking system. Not a good time to be a US citizen in the UK.
That said, the British in general have a reputation for being unruly, rude, drunken, fat, and very moody and this is certainly well earned by Londoners. The 'British' taking care how you use the word, Scots, Irish, Welsh, English and even those from the individual counties have very clear identities, Lancastrians, Geordies, Scousers and those from Cornwall and Yorkshire spring immediately to mind, many have very clear and distinct accents, there is no such thing as an 'English' accent.
As a Londoner myself, I would not recommend our dirty, overcrowded, and outrageously expensive 'city', not a city as much as a collection of 'mini-states' of over 8.5 million people, bigger than many of the countries in Europe.
If your were to England, Manchester is fun, Liverpool has a very distinct culture, those are the Scousers everyone is going on about, similarly Newcastle-upon-Tyne, home of the Geordies. Birmingham has improved considerably, andywhere in the South West can be fascinating.
Wales has Cardiff, the base for the new Dr. Who series and the Principality itself some very spectacular scenery.
Scotland is almost magical in places, Inverness, and the Scottish Highlands are very dramatic, as for the cities, I love Glasgow, very friendly, Edinburgh can be a little snooty, but great during the 'Fringe', one of the biggest 'performing arts' festivals in the world.
Ireland, the Irish are the warmest and most friendly people in the world, anywhere in the Emerald Isle is a little bit of heaven.
Don't be put off by the moans and groans of the 'British' we are in general terms easy going, tolerant, a little crazy, and really underneath that natural grumpiness are a good bunch of people.
As for the things you read and hear in the media, think what we read and hear about the people of the USA and how you often depict yourselves in Hollywood films.
I hope this gives a little more balanced a view than some of the others here. |

You really shouldn't construct your idea of Britain from films.
There are many obese people here; in fact, Britain has one of the worst obesity problems in the world outside the USA. And of course not all (or even most) British people are 'intelligent', 'healthy', or 'hilarious', no more than any other nationality.
You should also bear in mind that the weather in Britain is cold, rainy and unpredictable, that many things (such as transport, petrol, and cigarettes) are more expensive than they are in the USA, and that attitudes in general are very different.
It's not that you wouldn't enjoy studying here, but I suggest you look around at some more realistic sources of information before you make a big decision like that. I've seen a lot of Americans come here with a rose-tinted vision of Britain and they've been rapidly disabused. |

The weather is highly unpredictable.
Unfortunately, we are leading Europe in obesity, underage drinking and teenage pregnancies. (I guess we like drunk fat girls here. Something the National Tourist Board fail to promote!) |

Aw you're sweet :) Lol
Obesity is a problem here. We have a lot of fast food chains like in America. Most people prefer a take away than something healthy.
Things are quite expensive here too, which is a reason for the obesity problem i think, it's a lot cheaper to just dump some junk food on the table.
Another problem are chavs (foul mouthed, hoodie wearing, fight starting yobs in other words) they seem to be a growing issue in the UK. but all those things i listed depend on where you go. Prices will be higher in some areas (London for example) and much cheaper in some. Same with the chavs. There are hardly any by me but some places are full of them. Apart from that it's a nice, friendly place to live.
Hope you lots of rain as well! :D |

The nightlife brilliant? hahaha, you find a bunch of people drinking as much as they can take, peeing and being sick in the street attractive? One of the UK's biggest problems is binge drinking.
Someone said bad teeth. A lot of the population have good teeth because of the fluoride they put in the water which lowers your IQ but you have better teeth so its not too bad :)
Otherwise, its ok but you would find it better since those like me who have lived in the UK for their whole life may be a bit pessimistic on our country :P |

Try another European city, The UK is not as good as it used to be, more violent crime, and less safe at night. There are a lot of Obese people in the UK, but they are never on TV. |

The weather is bad.
The idiotic Prime Minister and all his followers are dreadful.
There are quite a few obese English people actually, but not as many as the USA no offence.
And everything is like 10 times the price it is anywhere else.
Other than that,I LOVE the UK! |

It's very expensive. It's going to get annoying as a US citizen can expect to be asked every 5 mins where you are from (e.g. San José, California, Denver Colorado). There are an increasing number of people over here with a butt the size of Jupiter, so enjoy the culture but don't expect miracles. |

Everything about the UK has become bad....we have our worst government in history, the country has been overrun by immigrants, every town and city is full of chavs, kids are allowed to run free sticking knives in people, its one of the most expensive places to live, the weather is crap.....need I go on. |

London it's poluted (the worst air quality in Erurope), the transport is terrible and it has a basket case for a mayor.
Londoners, they are self-centered, badly educated and diseased. Crime is terrible and rising. You are more likely to be murdered in London than New York. You won't have heard many London accents in film's, they won't be what you expect. Michael Caine is an exception, but even his accent is old fashioned.
Britain is catching up with America fast on the obesity stakes. The young are the worst age group. They don't eat as much as Americans, but they consume a vast amount of alcohol and eat little healthy food.
Much better to visit London than live there.
The rest of the country is O.K. to live.
Getting a job is diffficult at the moment because the Government has bankrupt the country and foreign workers are given preferencial treatment to do manual labour, construction work, etc.
The weak £ pound will make imports expensive and since the governments excessive taxes have forced most production abroad, prices will be very high for a while.
There are lots of drunken teenagers vomitting and collapsing in the streets every weekend. It is against the law, but the Government has filled the prisons with the mentally ill, people who have been caught walking on the cracks of the pavements and opposition politicians who dare to reveal government lies. There is no room in jail for the nuisance drunks, those who serve them, burgulars, professional shoplifters etc. |

Ok where do I begin?! The weather is very unpredictable (I carry an umbrella with me 365 days of the year) and often very cold or wet. In my opinion, there is no real culture, culture that you may find in other European countries. As mentioned before we have lots of chavs, and even when they take a break from mugging an old lady or bullying kids they are still highly annoying. After 6:30 there is nowhere to hang out apart from at bars. I'm not too sure if this applies to London, but where I live cafes and nice places where you can grab a coffee and relax close at about 6:30. I've noticed quite often that Americans tend to think that England is quite expensive which is probably because America is so cheap. And we do have obese people, just not as many as America ;) |

bad things...
the weather can be crappy, but you get used to it,
it is a kind of drinking culture...but again you get used to it (either stay out of the city center at night or go out, get smashed and be a part of it)
and jobs are very sparse at the moment,
oh and in case you haven't noticed, British people like to complain a lot ;]
But honestly i think it's a great and beautiful place and i count myself lucky for having the opportunity to live and grow up here.
i'm sure you'll love living here in the future. |

England is absolutely nothing like it is on the films, and there ARE ALOT of obese people. As for the accent, go listen to an Essex, Scouser, Geordie and i bet you bottom dollar that will put you of - that is even if you can understand it!! |

AMYFACEâ„¢

Chavs, Happy-Slappers, Druggies, Teen-trash who drink around the streets and get themselves pregnant and have no clue who the father is and the unpredictable weather is most annoying. There's alot of that unfortunatly, but it's decreasing with all the new laws. Fashion is great over here, there are alot of things, but i think it depends on what kind of things you like and what you apreciate in a culture so i really can't answer. I really want to move to America, what's it like over there? Swap? :) lol |

london is one of most exciting cities in the world but bad things about it include cost of living (expensive), stressful public transport and poor air quality. the good things far outweigh the bad though |

Hey im English, what you need to know is there is a difference between british and english.
But not to put you off il give you the bad points.
Taxes are high, we have the highest teenage pregnancy rate, we are full of chavs (google it, there violent nasty spiteful lowlives) everything is so expensive
and if you wanted to study here in a few years youd have to pay around triple the money to study because you would be a foreign student. i think you would have to stay about 3 years untill you can study here for the same price. oh and the weather isnt that nice.
But i must say i love living here, im 17 and live in london, i plan to go to fashion college, and i hope to become a fashion designer. you get the most friendliest people here, there is so many places to visit in london, and the nighlife is BRILLIANT. |

The Scots.
Our humour (we have a U in there..) is a lot less slapstick and more cynical.
Only some accents are nice, ever hear a scouser?
I'd like to think we were more intelligent but I couldn't say.
Much less obese people. |

other than that...i can't think of anything else bad. the grocery stores are really really good haha.
have fun if you decide to go! |
