Facts: yes, these are all facts. Interesting? Well, they're eclectic at least. Fun question to answer... thanks, Aznbuddy. :-)

The ancient Romans thought Britain was the last bit of land before the edge of the world. Its prime value to them was as a source of tin.

The UK has hatched a few authors who are reasonably well known beyond its shores, from Chaucer and Shakespeare to Terry Pratchett and JK Rowling.

Inventions which have their roots here include railways, sewing machines, postage stamps and rubber bands (just a random sample dredged from memory!) And football (soccer), penicillin, rugby football, the penny-farthing bicycle, tennis, cats-eyes for roads, golf, the mini-skirt and chicken tikka masala.

One country in the UK isn't represented at all on the Union Flag ("Union Jack"). The Welsh aren't too happy about that, as you can imagine.

The British national anthem is sung to the same tune as "Sweet Land of Liberty".

The seas around the UK are more thickly littered with shipwrecks than anywhere else in the world... Probably the most famous is the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's flagship. One of the spookiest is the M2 submarine, sunk with all hands off the south coast in 1932.

It was in the UK that the Magna Carta was signed in the 11th century (1076?). It is the birth of the idea that man is free and has rights by law.

UK is a country in north-western Europe. It is bordered to the south by the English Channel; to the east by the North Sea; to the west by the Irish Sea and the Atlantic ocean

I really would like it if people would quit thinking the world is fascinated with the queen and the uk.

I am so glad they aren't a part of our country and feel that they built their empire on the same principles as the vikings and romans - rape, pillage and plunder. Look at poor India for example.

Ick.

Can we NOT talk about them in here for at least a week?
