Why do so many people complain about England and say that they would leave if they could? It's not that hard to get out of here! You could go live in any other part of the UK. You could go live in any other part of the EU. It is also very, very easy to emigrate to Australia or New Zealand (I know because my family has done it). That gives you many, many countries to choose from. So hey, if you don't like it, then leave!
In my opinion, the pros are:
- There are millions of opportunities here career/business-wise, partly because it has a strong economy and partly because there is a large population located within a small area
- It's a great base to be able to travel from - we have cheap airfares and short flying times to many parts of the world
- Salaries here are quite good - the cost of living is certainly expensive, but then the fact that you can earn a lot of money means that it doesn't matter
- Most English people are really friendly and sociable. That might not be the impression that you get if you're, say, taking the tube around London, but that's just because people are wary of talking to strangers. If you actually lived and worked here you'd find that people are really nice
- We have good pubs!
I don't really think there are many cons, to be honest. To respond to what other people have said:
- Someone said it's crowded: I live in London and I can tell you that yep, London is riduculously crowded, but you asked about England not London and the same can't be said of the whole country
- People have said that taxes are high but they're certainly not as high as they are in many European countries!
- Someone commented that the NHS (public health service) is rubbish. It might not be perfect, but at least we have a public health service. They don't have one in the USA, and countries like New Zealand which claim to have one really don't
I think the main problem with England is the education system. The school-leaving age is too young for one thing. Also exams are marked far too leniently: it's now ridiculously easy to get A grades at GSCE and A-level. There are loads of people studying riduculously pointless subjects like media studies, instead of things like sciences which would be of use. And now, competition to get into the top universities is becoming a post code lottery instead of being based on academic achievements. |

One of the best things about England is the pound stirling. I love it. You can live there, earn the pound, use it to travel Europe and Africa, where ever you want WAY more affordably than if you were travelling on another currency.
England has incredible architecture - London, as well as sights such as Bath, Stone Henge..Brighton....it's all gorgeous. London is a wicked city - you can do and see anything there and everyone just gets on with it. I love the proximity to Europe, they don't realise how lucky they are. England is good because you can drink in the park, you can take public transport everywhere, Summer (when and if it arrives, this changes from year to year!) goes OFF....
Not so good things about living in England: the weather generally sucks. People from England don't appreciate England at all, so you find that if you say anything nice about their country they just shoot you down and sooner or later you get tired of it and just don't bother. The service provided by some of their companies such as BT (for phone lines) is incredibly poor and frustrating. You have to pay tax for having a TV. The landlords are frequently corrupt and uninterested in the rights of a tenant. Did I mention the rubbish weather? |

Pros. The most beautiful and varied natural landscape in the world. Still lots of culture. BBC Radio 4. Frequent dense rail network.
Cons. The people by and large are aggressive, suspiscious
and unfriendly; crime and anti social behaviour is a problem in many cities; the cost of living is high; schools and health care are very poor indeed unless you pay for the expensive private facilities. |

Pros. Amazing countryside, literature, ancient monuments/buildings, history and language. Cons. Immigration is out of control, rural life is being destroyed by the Labor government, crime is worse in the cities than most of our American counterparts, social breakdown amongst young people. |

good things are our beautiful scenery. temperate weather, ie no extremes of heat or cold and no hurricanes or tornadoes. we dont get beaten or killed by government forces. we can vote without risk of torture and death. we dont need to sell our children to survive. we can say what we like about the government. most of us can afford the basics in life such as cars, tvs, computers, x.boxes, holidays of some sort, clothes and food by the trollley load which is cheap as chips.
bad things is a government who doesnt give a damn about us, who has swamped the country with immigrants , and is allowing multiple housing to be built anywhere and everywhere. too many cars on the road making it pointless to actually own one. crime rate rising, rampant children running riot, the nanny state that doesnt nanny in the right places ie hospitals and maternity care in particular. criminals having more rights than the victims. all day drinking is out of control. obesity is out of control . is that enough? |

The pro's are some nice scenery, and quaint villages, and still some remaining culture, if you look for it. We have nice country pubs, Sunday roasts, with yorkshire pudding, left hand driving, better chocolate, good looking geezers, Free (ish ) health care.
Con's are. High taxes, high prices, high house prices, high crime rate, bad policeing, no N.H.S. dentists, no spare money, nasty noisy polluted Cities, dirty hospitals, terrible government, no rights to do things, (nanny state ) small houses, no rights.
All in all, I would say there are more con's than pro's, but I'm not complaining too much, I could be living in Beirut, or afghanistan, but I live here http://www.themagicofcornwall.com/Pages/photogallery/SECornwall/polperro/polperro_pics.htm So life's not too bad for me. |

The pro's are history, culture, sense, appreciation, involvement, knowledge, understanding, morals, values, education, standards, manners, institutions, generosity, justice, fairness, decency, fortitude, courage, determination, gravitas, virtue and wisdom.
The cons are that Britain no longer exhibits any of these things. Instead it is...
Mean, angry, bigotted, spiteful, critical, ignorant, philistine, hateful, prejudicial, uneducated, common, talentless, prurient, gormless, cowardly and wormlike.
The cure?....the latter can leave. |

depends whereabout in england you want to live but if it's London, you better be ready to live a seriously busy life and among very rude people. Not all Londoners are rude of course, just 99% of them!
I'm from the UK but Northern Ireland, not england. I was in London a few days ago and only met 1 nice person the whole time. It's a mad life if you lived there! I personally would never live in england! |
