Usually, at least in the US, it's based on age, not retirement status.

Many stores give senior discounts, often just on certain days, and many restaurants do also - sometimes they post the information, sometimes you have to ask.

Many entertainment venues have senior rates.

I assume your screen name London and your reference to "shops" says you live in the UK. The site http://www.seniorconcessions.co.uk looks like it has some useful information for the UK. The general outline looks somewhat similar to benefits in the US.

Many places have special rates for senior citizens and eateries like certain chip shops and pubs do a senior citizens menu.
A lot of tourist places also give seniors discounts, all these will be available on their ticket information details.
Transport also give discounts

Congratulations,
All that's true and I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice, tips, and the names of service's available.
But, you also get to,
Stand in the location of your choice,
raise your left hand loosely fisted,
with your middle finger fully extended
wear a big smile,
wave vigorously with your right hand,
yell out to passer-by's "I made it,,I got out alive."
You've joined the gang!
Hey, Good Luck, ya know....

I've been told about the European pension which you can claim at any time between the age of 61 and 65. This is never publicised but if you go to the social security and tell them you want to claim it they have to give it to you. It's more than the British pension.

If you are 60+get yourself a travel pass - train saves lots of hassle parking and often faster than driving.
Concessions on most tickets.
Get a Wednesday discount card for B&Q.
Fuel allowance should be automatic.
