Well here are some places you can visit, The Tower Of London, The London Dungeons, Tower Bridge, The London Eye, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, if the weather is nice get a boat trip on the River Thames. There are loads of things to do, also try www.visitlondon.com, I hope you have a great day.

Lots to do lots of shopping. You can take a tour on the double deckers and visit Canterbury, Down town London , London Bridge, The London and ride on the River Thames all in around 3 hours. Get back to the airport (Assuming you are using Heathrow) and do some window shopping

I cant attest to the feasibility of getting to and from, but the Tower of London is likely the best place to get a since of British history and pomp if you only have a short period. I would say allocate a half day with tube time etc. Second might be the British Museum depending on your taste. The Brits made a habit of collecting (?) things from around the world in the 19th and 20th century. For example, you can see the Rosetta stone and fantastic Egyption relics. Make sure you try real English ale of you are a beer drinker.

Shop!!!
Or you could do the tourist thing? London eye, tower of London, a quick sprint around the museums, go to Buckingham Palace and wave at the windows in case the Queen can see you?
I did this (rushed) in a day last summer but it depends how much attention you wanna take!

If you dont mind having a small walk and want to look at sights may I suggest get to Trafalgar Square, head down Whitehall, you will pass Horse gaurds (mounted troop Gaurding), Cenotaph (Memorial to the War Dead), Downing Street and you will end up at Westminster, Palace of Westminster and Big Ben in front of you, Westminster Abbey behind, walk up to St James Park and walk along one of the roads and you will pass the Wellington Barracks with the Guards Museum, and reach Buckingham palace. from there you can either head back down the mall to reach Green Park Tube station (Piccadilly line to Heathrow) or down Buckingham Palace Road to Victoria Station for train to Gatwick.
As you did not specify which airport you need to get to, travel to either Heathrow or Gatwick takes about 1hr, so give yourself an hour and a half just in case before you have to book in.
If this is unsuitable and you do not wish to walk, obtain a travelcard ticket and you can jump on and off the red busses.
Have a good time and dont miss your flight

Get on a hop on hop off bus and don't get off until you take it on the second time around. Get off at the main places you wanted to see from the first run.
