It obvioulsy depends on how far you wish to travel and the sot of things you like. Personally I like both Cambridge and Oxford for their architecture, Theatres museums etc, Wouldn't recommend punting in January though. They''ve also both got a lot of bars and clubs as well.

Have you been to York? It's a beautiful city with lots to see.

But wherever you go in the UK in winter - wrap up warm! January is real brass monkey weather!

York is a lovely, historical place if you like that sort of thing, as is Whitby, in North Yorkshire. Both are steeped in history with Captain Cook having sailed out of Whitby, and York, with it's Vikings. Both have conducted ghost walks on certain evenings and York has some fantastic bars and restaurants.

I hope you find somewhere really cool to go with your boyfriend. Good luck. :-)

You bet it will be cold in January in UK. Newcastle upon tyne is a nice city to visit. The night life on a weekend is very good.

Liverpool has been given a bad reputation but i have visited it lots of times and stayed in many hotels in and around the city. i found the people very friendly and welcoming to me, i was welcomed like a friend, there is lots to see, museums, art galleries, maritime museum . the shopping city is Hugh and Cater for every nationality. yes i can truly recommend Liverpool. you can get a train from London to lime street.

Bath is very beautiful.
There's a lot to see (Roman Baths are amazing) and a number of really great walks about the city (comedy/history tours etc) plus Longlete Saffari park is not too far away and that is an amazing day out! Also the night life in Bath isn't too bad either. Lots of places to eat too.

January will be cold everywhere, though the south is a little warmer usually. The temperatures don't get much below freezing though, and not much snow usually.

Bath and Canterbury are both pretty, and good for shopping, but I'm going to settle for York, which could have been the capital of England if history had taken a different course. There are plenty of ancient buildings, fantastic old pubs, and plenty of history to take in. Good for a weekend.
