It is Aberdeen. There is a hilarious description of this God awful city in a book called 'A big boy did in and ran away' by Chrisopher Brookmyre who is a darkly funny Scottish writer of crime/action fiction. It made me nearly fall off the bed laughing when I first read it!

The Granite City, The Flower of Scotland, The Silver City by the Golden Sands... Aberdeen!

If you are referring to The British Isles then it is Aberdeen, Scotland. It's know as that because granite was used for many of its buildings.

Aberdeen in Scotland is known as the "Granite City". (A few years back it was known as the "Gateway to the Afterlife", after an outbreak of some disease! Possibly salmonella poisoning from Scottish food!)
(Gee. I didn't know you wanted a run-down of all the Aberdeens in America, though i emmans has very kindly provided those boring facts so I don't need to bother).

It has its own police and fire departments, it has a school district, it has 12 parks, with Wilson Park being the largest park. Granite City has been mentioned in the news before, especially in 2003 when a factory burned near Prairie Farms Dairy.

Granite City was once a hub for the steel industry in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the loss of that industry, the town suffered a large decline in population, along with many businesses leaving the area. However, Granite City maintains a high-level of appeal, as evidenced in the photo above.

The city is the site of the Chain of Rocks Lock, the southernmost navigation lock on the Mississippi River. Granite City is situated in an area rich with Indian history and is not far from Cahokia Mounds Indian Burial Grounds, the largest burial ground in the Americas.
