I only think of snooker and the crucible when I ever see the name Sheffield and all the great players who've been there, especially my friend Terry Griffiths.

I'm looking at the cup he won when he played an exhibition match against another snooker friend of mine the late Cliff Wilson who was then the World Amateur Snooker Champion in 1979.

Probably because I go there.
I think it is a lively city, but then again, I'm living the student life, and that can be lively anywhere. |

Good = Steelcity, Full Monty, Green city, hospitals (childrens and hallamshire)
Bad = Boring, Dull, Stupid, Horrible place, sport (can be bad when Sheffield United play at home and you need to catch the bus that takes that route to get to hospital! Grrr) no fun, bad weather, trams n busses, northern general hospital, same thing every day (realtes to boring doesn't it?) |

I grew up in Leeds during the 1970s-1980s. We always looked down on Sheffield. We used to say in Leeds that the only good thing about it was the cheap bus fares! We used to visit family in the south and every time we went down the M1 you would go past all the steel factories and the chimneys which looked kind of scary. I was there a few weeks ago for the first time in years. Most of the factories have gone and I suppose it's cleaner than it was but on the whole the city is very run down and poor in comparison with Leeds. What industry is there in Sheffield nowadays? I didn't see a single modern or swanky office building in the entire city centre. They built the Meadowhall centre over some of the old industrial areas and it has been popular but it has also taken a lot of the life and the good shops out of the city centre, which seems very dreary and run down. We went to a department store called TJ Hughes which was like going back in time to Leeds in the 1970s or something. All in all I felt glad to get home to Leeds! |
