I think what confuses people here is that the UK isn't the full name. The full name is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. When I was young, and first learning about all this, I use to get so confused. So, Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales. And then there is Ireland, but only the North.

UK is made up of four Countries which are England, Scotland, Wales and Northen Ireland. These countries are together to form a consitutional monarch. they also have Overseas Territories none of them being countries (i think).
