Since 1973 Manchester is in a county all of its own..
Greater Manchester, prior to that it was in Lancashire

there may well be other manchesters out there.. but there is only one Manchester

redrobin
manchester is manchester but greater manchester straddles lancashire and cheshire

a proper map will say lancashire. just before cheshire. ive seen a map from 1887 and the only thing in manchester was a farm called moss side farm. thats true aswell.

ROBBIE B
greater manchester - ever since the local authorities reorganisation decided it shouldnt be in lancashire any more in the early 70's when the govenrnment just stuffed up the previous 1000 years plus history in england and wales - bit like new labour has done

lancashire,

Lancashire I think. However a lot of cities are not in a county as they are so big - e.g. London is not, it is referred to as 'Greater London' so Manchester may not be in a county at all, it may, as another answer has stated, be called 'Greater Manchester' when referred to as a county. Hope that makes sense!

(And for those who think the q is about an American city, look at the category guys!!)
