squash, as in lemon squash

muppetofkent
Soft drink, fizzy drink or by its brand name e.g. Coke, Pepsi.

Soda water is fizzy water, so if you ask for a whisky and soda that's what you'd get.

We also have lemonade which is similar to 7 Up or Sprite but more generic.

In some regions of the country, Soda is called Pop for Fizzy Pop.

It's called a soda. Or aerated water or carbonated beverage. There are various permutations and combinations for calling a soda. Take your pick...

english guy 1985
soda is not used in the UK to refer to fizzy drinks in general ,soda is what the Americans call 'club soda' as someone above me rightly pointed out.

we say 'fizzy drink' ,'pop' or -less commonly- 'fizzy pop' .

the simple answer to your question is 'fizzy drink' - thats the most common word used.

sjfivhm07
My relatives in the UK call it pop. It's not called squash typically like another person said... squash is when you buy a concentrated juice drink (although it's not really like juice- it's more of a juice coctail thing) and water it down so it's like normal juice. I guess you could put carbonated water into it and make it fizzy, but the term for things like coke and sprite is pop.

pop, as to the word coming from from us tv- my grandmother used the word in the 50's
So i would'nt say that us telly bombardment was where she got it from!

Strudders67
Assuming you mean such things as coke, sprite etc, we'd call them "fizzy drinks" or would name them individually. The phrase "soft drinks" covers all non-alcoholic drinks. People using the word 'pop' are just picking that up from the numerous American TV shows that we get bombarded with.

Squash is a juice concentrate /cordial to which you add water to make an orange, lemon or blackcurrant (etc) drink with.

What do Americans mean when they say soda?

To a Brit, your question seems unintelligable.
