What do you NEED to see if you go to London?

My family and I are going to london for 3 days. What are the highlights? What are the places that we should visit. Also, is stonehenge a must-see?

I have just read through the answers you have got so far and there are so many great ideas but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the London Duck Tours. It's a tour of London on a strange vehicle that can drive along the road and along water. The tour takes you past loads of the main sites - Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Nelson's Column, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham palace and many more. It then drives straight into the river Thames where you get a bit of a boat trip too. There is commentary all the way round which was really interesting. The website explains all. I would advise pre-booking during the summer holidays. http://www.londonducktours.co.uk/default.asp

This starts and finishes at the London Eye so we did both in the same day when we went. Also in the same area is the London Aquarium which I think is worth a look and the Imax cinema which shows 3D films: http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/imax/

The Natural History Museum is really good and has something for everyone. The dinosaurs section in the is always popular with children and the architecture of the building itself is amazing. I could easily spend a whole day in there but if you have time you can go to the Science Museum too as it is right near there.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned London Zoo but that is nice in good weather and is joined on to a big park which makes a nice walk.

you need to see Westminster Abbey, umm, tower of london, umm..covent gardens (good shopping), buckingham palace, St Pauls Cathedral, umm, the thames river, and if you can take a road trip, def. Stonehenge, and bathe, England (which I think is the birthplace of shakespere) oh you NEED to go to Harrods!

You could go to, The Natural History Museum, Science Museum and The V&A as they are accross the road from one and other, and if i remember correctly, walk down the road past the V&A you'll come to the Famouse and Very Expensive Harrods(get yourself a carrier bag)!!! the Houses of parlement and Big Ben you cant possibly miss as they are so big, St Pauls Cathedral, which is right round the corner from "Little Britain" if you like the series you may wish to photograph the street sign?!? also the Tate modern isnt far from there!(on the south bank) also on that side of the river you have the London Dungeons and i believe the War Museum on Tooley Street.

Trafalga Square with Nelsons Column, and the National Portrait Gallery (next to each other), obvoiusly, Buckingham Palace and hyde park which are just opposite (throught the Arch), and then of you could go to the west end and see a show, or you could go to covent garden shopping or for an evenings entertainment. hope thats of any use!

Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, Big Ben, Parliament, Piccadilly Circus (CHEAP SHOPPING!!!) and absolutley hit Herrod's Department Stoe, St. Paul's Cathedral (climbing to the top will get you some AMAZING picutres of the city- it is well worth the effort! it is also beautiful!), and the London Eye. Something that's really cheap and will help you get from place to place- experience the chunnel! we dont have a "metro" system here, and i thought it was really cool and so fast!

When we were there, we also made it a point to try to eat in at least one pub and also made a point to experience a full english tea.

hope this helped, have fun!

A few links to help you enjoy the sites, you might also use Google maps to see what near where you are staying

I dont know where you live but it sounds as though you may be abroad as you may not know that Stonehenge is about 300 miles away from London. Its difficult to advise you cos I dont know what your interests are. I would go to the British Museum. All the museums are close to each other so if you have the time you can see 2 or 3 in one day. The National Portrait gallery is brilliant. The London Eye (or the Big Wheel as locals call it) at Waterloo is very good, but long queues. Dont bother going to the Sea Life Centre opposite the London Eye.

It depends on what you like. I find just walking around the city is fantastic. You get to see all the architecture and it's absolutely beautiful. You should see Buckingham Palace - if you can catch the soldiers in front that's even better. You should also go take a walk along the Thames. It's very nice. You might want to take a look at the Tower of London, the Eye etc. Also, the west end is good for theatrical shows. You should take a look at St. Paul's cathedral and Parliament.

Stonehenge is outside of London so you will need to take some sort of transportation there. You can't take a train directly there so you will have to either go with a tour or drive your own car, but i don't suggest the latter since there never seems to be any place to park. I've gone there a few times. If you have never seen Stonehenge and you would appreciate looking at rocks then I think you should definitely! I really enjoyed seeing it.

There is just so much to see in London, unfortunately you won't have enough time in 3 days, but you will get a taste for it.

Enjoy yourself! I wish I was visiting again.

Take a tube to Tower Hill and visit the Tower of London.

Afterwards, walk across Tower Bridge, and turn right along the riverbank (heading west). You'll pass City Hall, HMS Belfast, the Globe Theatre, Tate Modern (with St. Paul's on the opposite bank, reachable by a very trendy new bridge if you want to take a very worthwhile detour), Oxo Tower, Gabriel's Wharf, National Theatre and finally reach the London Eye. It's a fabulous walk, and taken slowly with time to take refreshments and people watch is going to take about 2 hours.

Doing all the above would take a full day, and will give you a great insight into what London is about.

What exactly are you and your family into? London has something for everyone, all the fun of the fair from history to a night out you'll never forget, as long as you remember it.
Do the obvious, Buck Palace, The Tower, The Eye (book in advance on line saves a big Que), Tussuad's, etc.
But also go to the Museum of London, near the Barbican tube station, it explains so much, but is far from boring!
Wilton's Music Hall in the East End, they need your help and it's absolutely fascinating, it just made a list of world sites in danger, Google that one. Brick lane and Petticoat Lane on a Sunday, try one of the curry houses, and the Spitalfields Arms hidden away behind Bangra Town, but still a traditional East London Pub.
Listen I could go on and on, there is so much more to London than in the brochures, three days will never be enough, but enjoy it all, and just be aware that you have to take the rough with the smooth, but it's the best City on the Planet, good luck.

I went about 2 years ago with a class from my university, and it was INCREDIBLE. I recommend you go on the London Eye (the large ferris-wheel type thing) because you can see the whole city and it's absolutely beautiful!! We also went to St. Paul's Cathedral, which was also just awe-inspiring. Get a tour there. Shakespeare's Globe was neat just because it's got so much historical value and it was beautiful. The Tate Modern art museum was really cool. Lots of interesting displays. The British Museum was fun - I was really excited about the Rosetta Stone! While you are there, be sure to check out a traditional pub, too. Good food and drinks! :)

Stonehenge was just okay. It looks like the pictures and you can't get too close, but there is an audio tour (not too exciting) you can take. I think we spent too much time there, but it would be good for about 15 or 20 minutes, unless you are really interested in the historical aspect. But kids would get bored easily. So, no, not a must-see, unless you are really excited about it.

Check out the websites for these places if you are interested! Some of the fun level of these things might depend on the age of your kids, too. Good luck!!

The Tower of London - you'll get a fantastic guided tour from the Beefeaters.
