I am an American that has been living in England for about 8 months now. It does rain like everyone tells you, but it doesn't downpour like it does in the states. It seems to drizzle quite frequently. It has winter's like the southern US, not quite freezing, but still cold. The summer temp is cool in the mornings and evenings, but the days can get quite warm, maybe upper 70s, 80 degrees. If you are a meat and potato fan than England is for you. They love their meat. The also love to drink. There is no such thing as getting together for a beer in England, you get together for many beers. People love going to pubs here. sitting relaxing, talking and drinking. If you like Indian food, England is also good, next to fish and chips, curry is the next biggest thing. Lots of interesting castles, abbeys, cathedrals and landscapes throughout the country. The coast is pretty cool as well. I like the convenience of mini markets that don't actually rip you off like the convenient stores in the states. THeir prices are similar to the supermarket prices. Lots of old historic places to visit. If you like Roman, Saxon, Viking and tudor history, this is the place for you. Cons - things are expensive. But, I find that to be true of things under £100. Once you get up to computers, sofas and electronics, they are equivalent with the exchange rate. Things like restaurant, gas, milk, and other everyday items are expensive. The vast majority of people live in meager homes relative to the US. I personally could do with more space. Kitchens are usually small as are bedrooms and living rooms. Overall I like it, but then again, I'm not going to stay here forever. Probably great to visit, okay to live. |

I have been there 9 years ago with my English teacher and class. We stayed at host families in Hastings (south coast). The families were very friendly and caring, also the teachers in the language school.
I think England has a beautiful landscape, with all those hedges and parks, the chalk cliffs on the south coast, there is a lot of history (castles, mansions, "battle of Hastings - 1066", "William the Conqueror", also the cathedral of Canterbury and of course London, a multicultural place with lots of people from the former colonies on the one hand - very much British tradition on the other hand, a very interesting place.
British food is as "good" as it is said to be.
Most of the British tourists I have seen abroad (Greece, Turkey) are very very loud and drink very, very much. Perhaps they only act this way when they are on vacation.
I think the Royal family is very good for this country, England wouldn´t be the same without the "Queen", and they are also good for economy (tourism, yellow press,...)
Tony Blair, on the other hand, isn´t that great. He just wants to be "good friend" with Bush & Co. |

I just came back from my 1st trip there and I loved it. So much history, such a different culture in so many ways. Plus, it's in my blood so I am naturally drawn there.
A bit spendy though...gas, fags, train fare. |

It's easy to forget what a beautiful country England is. The cities can be cold, harsh places, but there is something in the contrast between those and the patches of green that I particularly love.
I have always loved the pride that we put into creating primarily beautiful things (especially cars - contrast Morgan, GTM, Lotus, Marcos with Porsche, Mercedes, BMW etc) which I think is forgotten when people think of our 'reserved' character as a country.
It is just such a shame that the country is being driven into the ground through politics and social strife. There is no respect now...not real respect...as it has been replaced by fear. |

I think it's cold and foggy all the time with stiff, formal people. Everything's expensive there, too. But I'd like to go there sometime. |

Beautiful green relatively unspoilt countryside, Stacks of history and historic sites in the cities and buildings to see, a major music capital of the world - and the downside is it's rather expensive here! :(
In my opinion it's still one of the best places to live in the world.
Sorry, I'm very biased!! |
