That is a pretty open ended question.
I think the UK is a great place to live, wouldn't swap it for the world. We have a rich and varied history and culture. The weather is challenging, but it is a price worth paying. |

I think it has lost its way. We need to throw out the illegal immigrants and worry about rebuilding the NHS and giving the cops and the courts some actual power. Like America, I like the idea, but the country has lost its way. |

Too many immigrants Brown should tighten up immigration . There are 80,000 polish in blackpool alone we're being overun. Im not racist but i think its all getting a bit too much. They need to screen people a little more to stop terrorist's from leaving and entering the country to train at afgan camps then come back over and try to kill us. |

The U.K. is not bad. I live in the U.S. and alot of the politics we use are very similar to the U.K. Plus i think people from the U.K. don't beat around the bush. They get right to the point! |

Adrian D has answered brilliantly. Once upon a time, this country was the best place in the world to live. It was a privilege. The people were fair minded and generous (although a little prone to self-righteousness on occasion). We had a definite culture, traditions and identity. Now half the population is paranoid about something all the time, we may not express ourselves freely because the powers that be tell us we may offend someone of another culture or race and a chance remark may be misinterpreted. Families are no longer stable and there is no shame any longer for crime. Having said all that it is still my country - till someone in power tells me different. |

I like living here, we could live in a worse place. It is like any country has its good and bad points.
The weather is crap but hopefully gobal warming will change that!! LOL
In general its a good place to live in my opinion although if I won the lottery I would be jetting off!! |

I can only write as a Yank visitor.
I found Great Britain to be an amazing place.
The people have a spirit that cannot be found anywhere else, a kind of indomitable nature that can't be faked or learned. You're either born with it or not. I'm not at all surprised that they are utterly unintimidated by terrorist threats.
That's not to say that the people aren't friendly and hospitable. Everywhere I went in England and Scotland, including London, folks went well out of their way to be helpful, friendly and polite. They'll ask gentle questions of you and try to determine whether you're a typical tourist idiot or if you're someone who really wants to experience a different culture. If you fall into the latter group, you will probably never fall into better company than a Brit or a Scot.
It's also been my experience that, once out of London, where it seems half the people are tourists, Americans are rather rarely seen and, generally, most welcome.
Also, thankfully, the folks there have the good sense not to assume that because we're Americans that we're also Bush supporters. They take us one at a time.
I wish the USA had the kind of zoning laws that Great Britain has. Instead of the suburban sprawl endemic throughout America, GB has intelligent planning that preserves open spaces and some of the most astonishing scenery in the world. It is almost impossible for a Yank to travel more than 20 minutes from London and not be amazed by the sheer beauty of the place.
The downside is that, by Yank standards, GB is crazy expensive, London even more so.
I would say that housing is roughly double what it is here and gas (petrol) is about treble but. . . the minimum wage is much higher and there is universal healthcare.
All of that aside, Great Britain is unique. It just has to be experienced firsthand.
The people, the pub culture, the scenery, the lifestyle all have to be enjoyed in person.
A warning: to visit is to want to live there. I speak from experience. |

I think Adrian D really nailed it for me I totally agree with him
We really need to hold the next govt to book for the state of illegals and immigrants in general Its a good thing the Germans did'nt get all these polaks otherwise they'd started WW3 |

That's a pretty vague question - anywhere you go (like any job) has good points and bad points - I've travelled a lot and the UK is quite a decent place to live - Despite criticism of the NHS, not many places have free healthcare or decent (if existent at all) social welfare systems. The only things I don't like about the UK is the relentless rain and the growing misguided nationalistic atmosphere - I anticipate that this question will throw up all the usual BNP inspired crap that we're getting so used to hearing - can't wait! |

on a very basic level people in general have to work to hard their everyday is for most people concerned with work.. on a global level it is one of the best countries in the world no doubt about that whatsoever |

It's a very expensive place to live, in my opinion. When other people come here, they are often surprised by our high prices. But we tend to get higher wages than them, so we don't notice, until we go abroad where everything is cheaper! For example, UK vs US. The conversion rate is at an all-time high - one pound sterling is equivelant to two US dollars. But the prices are the same! In the UK, a Nintendo DS package would have cost me £120. In the US, the exact same package was $120! I don't know how on earth we got past customs...
Apart from that, it's great. We're safer (apparently, according to the stats) than many countries and we have a great sense of humour. And we have amazing spelling (like humour)! And of course, it's very wet all the time. Drought? Codswallop! Go us. |

I love the way people say "I'm not racist, BUT ..." and then come out with the most ridiculous Cr*p to show that they are!
Immigration is a good thing. Look what it did for the US! Everyone there is an immigrant! The reason you don't like the UK is that we are the most tolerant and bigotted people, the kindest and cruellest, and completely different from any other nationality, except for those we are exactly the same as.
Pretty place, people have good hearts, most of them, and we love an underdog. Well, we have done up to now - now we only like people who's name is all over the front of the tabloids for poking stuff up their noses!
You should visit and make up your own mind!!! |

Well I have family in London, Bath, Glascow, Coalburn and Llanarkshire.
I LOVE them and the UK.
We have a huge history with them and while some can be elitists (sorry Uncle Tam), they are our one of our staunchist allies.
And as a student of history, OMG.
Class and Culture....
And they have the BEST Chocolates.....Love me a Crunchie and Flake. |

Big Brother taking every penny of its people..The class system still rules,The rich 3% stole the land in 1700 through dodgy laws passed in parliment and they still got hold of it today...Used to be bit more friendly now feels dog eat dog nobody would help any one,all about material wealth...So in general the lot of people turned into android sheep..We produce nothing as a nation...Its boring ,bland oppressive and expensive..As Moz said" All terribly depressed but remarkably dressed, thats all you need..." |
