What do you think about the UK being voted the dullest place on earth? |

"After 30 years of travel, I'm afraid to say the UK is the worst [country]. It's cold, grey, violent and the population is completely controlled by the media." Additional Details The quote I took was from the website - it isn't my view. That's why it is in quotation marks. Don't get so defensive people. I'm just showing you what is says on the website. Well, despite the fact I moan about the UK quite a lot, I can honestly say that I have visited worse countries. These adjectives can be applied to a lot of countries I have been to - Germany and Poland arecolder places than the UK, Scandinavian countries have far more depressing winters, the Japanese are far more media-obsessed than the Brits, The Netherlands, the Ukraine and parts of Russia are pretty grey and I found parts of America and Columbia to be far more violent and scary.
I think the person who wrote this on their website was probably like a lot of international visitors to the UK - they have grown up on a diet of what they believe to be Britain. By this, I mean a fictionalised view of the UK with tea and biscuits, green country lanes, people in bowler hats, red London buses, people calling each other "chap", old ladies on bicycles in idyllic villages solving crimes. Then they arrive in the Uk and find it is like any other Western society - TV rules, people don't have time for each other, rush rush rush, crime, immigration, social problems, poverty etc etc |

Very sad conclusion. I live on south coast. Its usually sunny warm and safe. Perhaps the writers are referring to parts of London they do not like. They should travel beyond the motorways. |

Well i can understand the cold and grey part its called weather!!
As for violent compared to crimes in other countries when someone here is stabbed say? it still makes the tabloids yet in other countries its that common place it would bog down their tabloids if they reported every stabbing!!
Our media is very down lately on the negativity of this country and i do agree in some aspects of that remark, but to be fair such as the recent knife culture or Jade Goodies death it has brought awareness to such issues for the better and campaigns are going on left right and centre to highlight these causes... Only time will tell if they work but so far the response has been promising.. |

I too have travelled a lot in my time, but contrary to you, the U;K is certainly not the worst. At least we have freedom of speech, and quite frankly who wants to live where the seasons are the same through out the year, or to have monsoons, droughts etc. yes we get some really bad weather here too but nothing like in some counties. Violent? Hah go to some countries. I don't know which counties you visited but obviously not the same as myself |

"After 30 years of travel, I'm afraid to say the UK is the worst [country]. It's cold, grey, violent and the population is completely controlled by the media."
Obviously written by someone who has never visited Russia, Afghanistan or North Korea. Or anywhere in sub-saharan Africa for that matter.
The UK isn't perfect and does suffer by comparison to other Western European nations, but to say it's the worst country when various genuine hellholes exist in the third world is just silly hyperbole.
All this tells me is that UK people enjoy doing themselves down an awful lot. An American who said similar things about his own country wouldn't get invited to many dinner parties, yet at British parties it's often the main thread of conversation.
I'm looking out of my window right now. The sun is shining, the sky is clear and it all looks rather beautiful, and there's not a hint of violence, coldness or greyness to be seen.
As for the notion that "in Soviet Britain, the media controls YOU!" well, nonsense. I gave up on TV years ago, and the newspaper is only used to line the cat's litter tray. |

I disagree. I think that the UK has got beautiful architecture, great history and beautiful countryside. Have you seen pictures of Lake District, Peak District? They can be the most beautiful places in the world. Most people live in cities so how do they know what the UK is really like outside the city? Whoever write that article has obviously not really explored the UK at it's best
Other countries are duller I think. countries like Iraq and Iran just have desert nothing else. The UK has lot's of character and is not dull |

When I read articles and questions of this nature it makes me even more proud of my country. Our society is nowhere near the most violent in the Western world, let alone the planet. Our media just shouts about our problems rather than airbrushing them as they do in countries such as France and Australia.
Our weather is often rainy but give me lush green countryside over dreary yellows and browns, any day.
Yet many people from other countries continue to launch unprovoked attacks on us. Does it take a genius to work out why? Let me put it this way, I am a Newcastle United fan and the clubs I tend to dislike the most - apart from Sunderland - well, they tend to sit around the top of the league, if you know what I mean... |

Just because there is an article saying that doesn't make it fact.
The UK has it's problems, but so do many other countries, with so much history and so many things going on, i really think 'dull' is the wrong word to use.
Sh ithole maybe, dull definitely not.
But i'd still rather live here then many other places,
we take for granted that we live in a country with so many opportunities.
i think people need to take there heads out of there arses. |

Not true at all.Yes its mostly cold and grey throughout the year but we have had hot , dry and sunny summers. As for crime that is mostly blown up by the media and most countries even the perfect USA gets lots of crime.I consider myself lucky to live here it could be worst and i could be living in hot dry boring place such as Australia or a poor country in Africa where they would do anything to have some food and water. |

I have lived in England all my life, and yes it is absolutely the dullest place, maybe not on earth, but out of all the places i have been to. |

Who cares. I hate these type of articles because it's purely down to opinion and taste. Why waste your time reading it because it's completely pointless, if you look around you will find that everyone just gets on with their lives. Claims of "violent" and "controlled by the media" are only a minority of people and the weather isn't too bad (snow in the Winter and sunshine in the Summer - works for me). The UK is a great country. |

I agree completely. Its awful.
All the towns look the same.
The houses and people are drab. The british white people are sad without any sparkle and frightened of everyone else. Its dirty cold obsessed with media and lots of british people have an innate grotty voyeuristic yet ironically arrogant judgementalism.
Theyre negative lazy vulgar and self consumed.
Also very racist bigotted yet ignorant of their own tangled genealogy and gruesome history. Yes its a dull hole of a country all right ! |
