Birmingham is fantastic!!!!
Having just arrived in Birmingham where would you start?. Well you might like to start with Brindleyplace just off Broad Street. This area gets really lively at night times but lets assume that you have a whole day ahead of you. Take a wander around Brindleyplace with its modern buildings and cafe and restaurant bars. A walk along the canal side will take you to the National Indoor Arena where the TV series ' Gladiators' was filmed. The National Sea Life Centre is here and you may have noticed the Icon Gallery just off Brindleyplace Square.
Walk back along the canal sidewalk and pass under the tunnel along by the canal and you will enter Gas Street Basin. The canals are enjoying a renaissance and the Gas Basin usually has a host of canal boats berthed up along its banks.
If you walk back the way you came and cross over the footbridge by the Indoor Convention Centre you can pass through the inside of this spacious and attractive modern building which houses the Symphony Hall and plays host to important visitors to Birmingham. Many functions are held here and the modern architecture is pleasing to the eye.
You will come out into Centenary Square. This is where the New Year Celebrations are held and several annual events run by the local council. The Rep is situated in Centenary Square along with the Hall of Memory and Baskerville House. If you continue on your journey you can either visit the Mailbox or pass through the central library into Victoria Square where you will see the magnificent Council House and Town Hall.
From here there are a number of places you might like to visit. The Museum and Art Gallery is definately worth considering and from Victoria Square you can walk down New Street and into the city centre and its shopping malls, the Bullring and Millenium Point. The Chinese Quarter is also only a ten minute walk from Victoria Square.
If you are looking for a night out on the town the main clubbing areas and the busiest pubs are near the Chinese Quarter and Broad Street. You could spend a whole evening just around Broad Street which has a wide variety of pubs and clubs for all tastes along with plenty of restaurants and cafe bars. If you want to visit Star City you will need to take a cab as it is quite some distance from the city centre. |

Wendy P is spot on - its a great place to live and work, and great social life.
Im a brummie born and bred, and won't go anywhere else.
I bet half the negative comments have come from those passing through on the train! |

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!
People do make me laugh on this site! They answer questions when they obviously don't know a thing about it!
Birmingham is actually only made up of 25.7% of ethnic minorities! very few are actually immigrants! They are born here!
Brum is a brill place! BEST place ive ever been to in the UK anyway. Great people, Great nightlife, Great Shopping! Everything you could want in a place.
Birmingham has more green spaces than any other UK city and more trees than people, so concrete jungle my ****!
The biggest and best shopping centre in Europe. The Bullring. The most loving, homely, welcoming, friendly and most of all funny people in the world hail from Birmingham!
They are so nice its untrue, they give you the time of day to tell which direction a certain place is and if they dont know, they will go out of their way to find out!
Being such a big city I expected Birmingham to be somewhat impersonal but it has the biggest community spirit i have ever come across. Everyone seems to know everyone, i know that's immpossible but i really seems that way. A Global city with a Local Heart! |

Although I now live in Cyprus...Birmingham is my home town, and I will always have a soft spot for it. Yes, its a typical city, and not partucularly pretty, and oddly, though it seems everyone wants to knock it....it seems everyone is happy to go and live there!! Lets just say Birmingham is very muliti-cultural these days, and though it may not appeal to some, it does still have lts of redeeming features! |
|

'Er indoors!!

There's nothing wrong with Brum, give me Birmingham anyday, to London, and the Birmingham people are MUCH nicer. I moved to Cornwall 14 years ago, but still call Birmingham home. Like any city, there are good parts and bad parts. AND, despite the ramblings of some idiots who have comented on here, We are not all called Kevin, and we are not all un-educated. AND, I, or any of my relatives are depressed, try moving away from the city centre, which is always depressing. |

i moved here a couple of years ago and these are my observations.
its huge and overdeveloped and overpopulated
it has some good bars and clubs and theatres but isnt particularly cultural despite advertising itself as if it is.
its not very scenic
it appears to be mainly muslim and african in population
there's plenty of work here
it's very claustrophobic
the brummies are some of the warmest and funniest people i've ever met.
there's nothing really notable about the landscape or buildings unless you count spaghetti junction! |
