I've liked just about all the Canadians I've met abroad
(here in the UK, backpacking Australia, New Zealand...)
They can't all be nice, just on statistics, but...
And my one visit to Canada was just amazing:
Toronto, the real Millennium New Year 2000/2001
-10c, Live jazz outside, fireworks, illuminated ice sculptures...
Frozen Niagara was, I suspect, much better than the packed summer one.
And the museum exhibition I'd flown the Atlantic to see was as good as I'd hoped.
I'll be back when funds allow, and I want to see the Vancouver side and the Rockies, too.
----------------
And, contrary to the at least terribly uninformed Paul M,
I appreciate the role and reputation the Canadian armed forces have had, in two world wars and Korea, and in peacekeeping situations since then.
Kipling: a Canadian Memorial (fromWW1)
"From little towns in a far land we came,
To save our honour and a world aflame.
By little towns in a far land we sleep;
and trust that world we won for you to keep!" |

They got the better deal, they must count themselves lucky to be born north of the border, not south. They have less crime, free medical health insurance and all meds paid for, and they seem happier. Also, the world doesn't hate them for invading other countries every 5 years. |

They are like Americans would be if Americans lived in the C21st. Don't know about this twerp Harper, mind. He sounds like some Thatcherite nightmare, but I guess you have got your share of Rednecks out West , too. |

I'd like to visit north Canada.
I think of Canadians as a nicer version of Americans :0
Do you get annoyed that you are always associated with America?
Do you sometimes wish you were on a completely different island? |

I know some Brits that have moved there, and love the quality of life there. They say it is so different from the rush of life in England, and say it is going back many years when folks were kind and helped each other in England, but don't now. They were welcomed by Canadians, and the slower pace of life where family values matter more.Of course Canada will always be looked on as a poor relation to the states by many, and has conflict between English speakers and French speakers in some areas. In many ways ,it is still an unknown country by Brits. It is vast, which may be the problem. All I can say is that the Brits I know were welcome in that safe and nice old fashioned family value country. |

When working in bars in a tourist area, it was easy to tell the difference. Canadians asked for beer, or which one I'd recommend, then they'd shoot the ****, Americans always asked for iced water, and what kinds of ice-cream were available? Then sat making wee calculations in notebooks, and looked very harrassed. I'd definitely want to holiday with Canadians, and I've even got the tuxedo 'specially! |

Nice people, both the ones I've met here in the UK and in my one visit to Canada. Spotless city streets in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Winnipeg (what do you do with your litter??). My impression of the country from a 30-hour train ride from Toronto to Winnipeg is that it's amazingly empty - after about an hour after leaving Toronto it's all forests, and lakes, and forests, and lakes, and forests, and lakes, and - oh look! a person! ... until you get within an hour or so of Winnipeg when suddenly it all becomes prairie.
I really would like to go back and see more of the country, maybe in 2010 when I've got a bit more money. |

They have nice landscape in the countryside, but they don't take an active role in the world by speaking out or putting their neck on the line.
They will not be remembered as a country that took the lead on world issues. |
