Hi - live in Manchester, but both cities are great! Runcorn is just south of Liverpool, on the way to Crewe - St Helens is more 'in between' the cities than Runcorn is!
Talking of ports, Mehmet - Manchester's was the third most busiest in the world in the early 20th century.
Charterman - been to Streatham, or even Peckham, south London yet? They make the worst districts of Manchester look like Harrow! |

Love them both.
I live in Leeds but have family living in Manchester, Liverpool and Middlesbrough.
I love all the cities in the North actually, some cities down South are nice as well, but people in the North of England are (usually) very polite and friendly - I just don't get that down South, or is it just me? |

When I first went to Manchester in the 1980s from London, to be honest I really thought it was horrible. It looked so dull. But I went a few years ago and its like a different city, as posh as London and as expensive as London. The Trafford centre, centre of Manchester, tram are great! Obviously north Manchester is still a dump but that can't be helped.
Liverpool has the sea, which is a big bonus. You get the feeling you are going to a great city with a great history when you arrive in Lime Street station. Liverpool is like Hamburg; it has a great Maritime history and was once as important as London. But Liverpool once a great place is not so great now. It has been neglected for too long by our government like most of the north. I didn't see the same improvements in Liverpool as I saw in Manchester. I heard its population is decreasing; this is very sad. |

Well Manchester is my home city. I live in London now and I love it, but Manchester has a really unique Northern Character we should be proud of. It has a rich history of cotton, social reform and the Industrial revolution. It also has a history of poverty and workers' injustice and has been subservient to the affluent south of England for decades. Manchester is way more easy going than angry, rage-filled and busy London. It has a more layed back agenda and a centralised, easy to access shoping district. It is also home to a world class Egyptology Pre-Raphaelite collections. |

They are both dumps. What all the other replies have not said is what they are like when you leave the city centres.
Manchester has a very high crime rate. Muggings,shootings,stabbings,burglaries,... crime are all rife. The suburbs would not look out of place in the third world. Buildings are all boarded up, weeds growing out of the roofs. Burnt out shops and cars are aplenty. The city council is wasteful in the extreme. Bomb sites from the last war still undeveloped. Despite this, it has a certain charm compared to Liverpool.
I have driven into Liverpool from the 4 points of the compass, and all the roads have row after row of boarded up houses that were purchased by an incompetent Labour council for road widening schemes back in the 60s. Today, they are still there, a monument to municipal indecision and incompetence.
A saturday night out in Liverpool usually ends in the casualty department. Hoards of fat drunken female chavs in clothes that are 2 sizes too small for them are to be seen, knickerless, peeing in the gutter, being sick down them selves or lying passed out in the middle of the road with their legs open nursing a cold kebab.
My friends from Japan thought it was hilarious and kept photographing them to prove how ugly the British women are. I felt shame and embarrassment.
We toured all of the UK, and these 2 cities proved to be the most decrepit and disgusting. |

If I can sum up the culture of these cities then Football, Mac Donald's, getting drunk and watching Big Brother is just about it...... |

I agree with Charterman, I used to live in Greater Manchester but left to live in Spain where you can walk the streets without fear.
The outskirts of the cities are disgusting like he says boarded up, rubbish dumps etc. |
