It disgusts me how ungrateful some people are to live in this country.

I will not deny that there are negative aspects to it and that our democracy is slowly becoming less democratic, but it is certainly not a 'pile of ****'. There may not be sunshine 24/7 but there's nothing wrong with a bit of rain and you'd be sorry if we got none, wouldn't you?

Now about the government - I think one of the main problems is a lack of clarity within our political system. In America, or anywhere with a presidential system, the role of the Executive is clear. But in the UK, the Prime Minister's duties, rights, responsibilities and power are all so vague. Thatcher, Major, Blair and Brown could all have done whatever the hell they wanted (and Thatcher did, especially towards the end of her reign what with the poll tax and all. Blair gave it a good short too.. And no doubt Cameron would) and their only guidelines were convention. I mean, I would hope that something would be done if a PM tried to create a dictatorship, that's why we have a separation of powers but we're basically living in an elective dictatorship as it is. Well, we certainly were with Blair. Apologies that I'm coming over all Nick Cohen here.. But we could really use a codified constitution to clear this stuff up.. You know we're one of only three countries that have an uncodified constitution? And I believe the others are Israel and New Zealand. Admittedly, if we were ever in need of drastic change, it might be a bit tricky, like when Bill Clinton tried to outlaw handguns in America.. Because, correct me if I'm wrong (I mean, actually, do, I'm about 80% sure), you need agreement from 2/3 of the house of representatives, 2/3 of congress and 3/4 of the states. So, it's pretty hard to push through a change in America.. I think there have been something like 27 constitutional reforms since they got a codified constitution and 10 of them were from the Bill of Rights.

But that's a different story..

Immigrants don't take our jobs. They take jobs that we are too lazy or ungrateful to take (well, y'know, I'm generalizing here, but yeah). It's easier to blame them than face the facts. It's always been that way and not just here, either.. I don't think we should stop these people coming to our country. I don't want to end up living in a North Korea knock-off.

Well, that was a big rant.. I suppose, when it comes down to it, that's one of the main things about the UK. People LOVE to complain. The way people have interpreted your question shows what I mean. People like to take their chance to share their views with anyone and everyone who will listen. Me included! But I still love it here. I mean, I want to see the world and experience different cultures, but..

This is my home. Whether I like it or not.
And it turns out I do.

Here we go with the usual depressing array of answers. The worst thing about Britain is the blame culture with 'foreigners' apparently responsible for all the ills of the country. Most of the so called immigrants
are by now 2nd or 3rd generation incomers. These people work as doctors, nurses, staff the transport system, clean offices airports and schools, run all those delicious ethnic restaurants and small late night shops we so eagerly patronise. A small minority turn to crime of course just as an increasingly large minority of the white population who are perfectly able to work ,live on benefits; most very recent immigrants are from eastern Europe; they work in agriculture and as plumbers and other trades; they work hard and are punctual unlike their English counterparts. Successive governments in Britain have been woefully inefficient - the present Labour government of course has spent billions on the National Health Service with little palpable improvement following; the schools are shocking; half the population seems to be semi literate obsessed with fame, show business, sex
and materialism.
But wait there is so much that is delightful about the U.K. We have the most beautiful countryside in the world; every type of landscape is represented on this small island from the gentle green downland of southern England to the Highland Wilderness of Scotland. We have the BBC with its 5 national radio stations plus local radio plus 4 national TV stations catering for absoluitely every taste; there is everything from all types of music through high art, sport and drama
and current affairs; no advertising and all it costs via the licence fee
is less than £3 per week; we have beautiful architecture; London is one of the best world cities for theatre, art galleries, museums and restaurants. The much maligned climate is great. It is so rare to have any sort of really extreme weather. Britain is a bit bonkers; it will continue to muddle on, but I'll never leave

Even with all the hassle of the crappy government and binge drinking pregnant teenagers etc, it's still a great place to live,

it has so much history, a sense of home, great people, great shops, great food, great TV shows, great pubs and some great opportunities.

You can be born with nothing and make something of yourself here, and that's almost impossible in many countries.
I think people underestimate how good we have it.

I'm proud to be from England, Uk, Britain.

Oh, and it rains a lot, but it isn't all that bad =]

pretty cold. but amazing.
the most fluctuating, crazy *** and exciting musical scene in the whole of the cosmos, in my opinion

dont go south, go north ;)

but, being destroyed by a succession of shitty governments and a huge influx of fairly skill-less foreigners draining resources and not returning much to the melting pot

but, an amazing place to live

I think we need to get a decent government in there, one that's not obsessed with making this country 'multicultural' and pandering to the hurt feelings of others (ie political correctness).
I think Gordon Brown is a terrible PM - he has no charisma or leadership skills whatsoever, and he is so stubborn; he doesn't realise majority of the country want to see him gone.
I also think we are becoming overrun with chavs and other low-lifes, and our judicial system needs a major overhaul.

We used to have the greatest empire on the planet, trouble is, everywhere we conquered we ended up bringing them all back with us.

Britain and the British are good. the problem is the way the country is run. the vast majority of the people that collect money from the government the worker and the rest. don't need to do any thing for any thing and no one cares and if they do care they get put down by the money collectors it is a shame that the good people don't get to the top

it's where I live.
It's got a fairly bad weather roll, all through the year, most people think it's going to the shits, but if you look in the right places it's so nice. almost as if you're not even in the UK.
There doesn't seem to be as much to do as maybe america, and it's not that cultural. but its got some lovely things about it, also some terrible things

Great place if you don't wanna do much, not a great holiday destination, but it's good for days out or weekends away :)
it's schooling system is terrible

Well i'm in England which is in the UK and I have to say I like it here... There is alot of crime but it doesn't realy affect me. The weather is alright. It is easy to get to beaches and there are some good attractions. I would move abroad if I had enough money though.. I'm sure alot of places are better to live than here right now.

England was great now it's gone down the grate, we now import criminals and scum from all over Europe, we are now a third world country receiving charity for our pensioners from the Scandinavian countries, we have become a den of dishonesty were the politician and financiers are happy to rob the tax payers, its the pits.
