What does an american accent sound like to an british person with a british accent?

When I thin of american accent (im american)

I think of ... no accent. We say our words plain and dry with no kind of pretty sound like british people do.

British accents are the normal accent to us. I think that american accents are way cooler. Almost everyone in movies has an american accent, so I guess it sounds glamorous and 'hollywood like' to us.

I was trading accents with a British friend. I did my interpretation of a British accent, then asked him to do an American one. He held his nose closed and spoke with a very nasal tone, pronouncing very a flat "a."

an american accent to a british person with a british accent would sound weird but believe me, us british have got used to that business so no worries really. the main idea is that we understand

Small point to note- there's no such thing as a "British" accent! We have regional accents just like the Americans.
I'm actually quite interested to know which area of the UK Americans consider to have the representative "British" accent?

i thought the americans were the ones with the accent and the proper way of pronouncing words was the british way, but maybe thats wrong i dont know...

I think it depends on the accent since there are regional accents.

With a massive generalisation I'd say an American accent to a Brit is a CNN accent, and a British accent to an American is a BBC News/BBC Radio accent.

People in Eastenders don't sound the same to those in Coronation Street, although if your hearing isn't able to pick up the slight differences in regional accents then the difference may not be heard.

It's possible phrases may play a part as well... although I've not experienced an American asking me if I want a brew or wanna cuppa.

I heard from a classmate that British people say Americans sound like we're asking a question all the time. I think this is because we tend to raise our pitch at the end of every sentence, but not all Americans do that of course. I find that a large percentage of college kids do sound like this.

I've been to the UK a couple times and to me the representative British accent would be the English accent (Harry Potter like?). It sounds a lot better than Scottish accent, just to answer someone's question of what would represent a British accent to Americans.

"We say our words plain and dry with no kind of pretty sound like british people do."

This is the most retarded statement I have heard this year.

English of course is our language. The Yanks took it and abused it.

However if you speak slowly we will understand you.

Well, it would depend of where you're from. If you're from the South, you're going to have a southern accent. If you're from up north, like around Canada, you'll sound different than someone who's from alabama.

Psycho
Why do so many Americans think that they 'don't have accents'? It's the English language, so surely if anyone gets the bragging right of 'not having an accent' it should be those from England who speak plainly? American accents are often very pronounced, but it always seems like a lack of accent to you simply because you are used to it. If you were South African and you heard an American you most certainly would not think that they were 'accent-less'.

I'm sorry if I came of rude but that sort of thing really grinds my nerves.

american accents are dum, stupid and annoying! no offense if you have one but i feel so sorry or you to have one! english accents are soooo better and anerican accents say everything wrong! (You asked for my opinion by the way!)
