I live near the beautiful ancient city of York...So I'll have to include it :)
My faves are
Durham, Oxford, Newcastle and Edinbrough...Oh and Glasgow!
I know that's six and that TWO are in Scotland...But never mind lolol...Why limit yourselves to England? |

Oxford-Cambridge-Bath-Durham and York. all steeped in history and beautiful architecture.
(If you mean Great Britain not England, go to Edinburgh too) |

Bath, Edinburgh (Scotland), Cambridge, Leeds and York.
Unless you have some other ideas on your mind i think these are good places to visit.
I used to live in Bath and I miss not living there now, it's so pretty.
The vibes in Edinburgh are amazing and so cultural.
Cambridge is quite historical
Leeds definitely good for shopping as well as the historical side
And York is pretty too. |

hi there.
tricky! London has everything, so we need a different vibe...
1) Bath. Visit the Georgian areas and the Roman baths, absolutely stunning.
2) York. With the Minster and the Town Walls and the Shambles, York has a really good medieval feel and a great sense of history.
3) Durham. The cathedral and castle are must-sees, the streets around them so pretty, a definite.
4) Liverpool. A victorian masterpiece, museums and art galleries to die for. Then walk Dale Street down to the river and visit the "three graces" buildings and the Albert Dock.
5) Edinburgh (Scotland). Walk the royal mile, climb up to the castle and take the ghost tour of the underground city, a really beautiful place.
Enjoy, Steve. |

Bath, Chester, Durham, Oxford and York are five outstanding cities that spring to mind.
There are many others I could name, but I particularly love the aforementioned.
In Scotland, Edinburgh, Hawick, and Inverness are a must.
In England's north-east, if nightlife is your thing, don't forget the "Toon" (Newcastle-upon-Tyne). |

Depends if you want history and heritage.Cambridge is better than Oxford.,so do one and not both. York has medieval city walls, narrow cobbled streets and a magnificent Gothic Minster,as well as a castle..There is also a "ride" through Viking York to see the sounds and smells in Viking days. Stratford on Avon if you like Shakespear.Warwick has the best castle in England and has actors as butlers and maids,as well as a dank dungeon. The last two are close together and you can do them both in the same day.Chester is also a walled city and is popular with Americans. It has a Roman connections.Durham is a World Heriage Site, and well worth a visit with its caslte and cateradral.Go to Edinburgh to see the famous Edinburgh Tattoo in the caslte grounds, where folks from all over the world come and see it and where performers from around the world play. The final is lone Scotish piper on the caslte ramparts playing a lament,a golden moment that will stick in your mind forever. |

While you can get to Lincoln from London by getting off the ECML at Peterborough........... or if flying into Manchester International Airport instead of Heathrow / Gatwick, etc down in London, the TransPennine Express service from Manchester Airport connects you to the ECML at York http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/ |

Liverpool! The vibe & energy in that city is exciting, I have visited numerous times and LOVE it! Take a trip on the ferry across the mersey its a great experience, the shopping and night life is fantastic & is also capital of culture for 2008, MTV was here hosting music artists not long ago
Birmingham, again the shopping is fantastic & the bullring design itself is stunning, there are sooo many cafes and restaurants to choose from you will be spoilt for choice.
Bath, gorgeous place, beautiful scenery and a great selection of pubs with lush food, I took a cable car ride up there and loved the views, scary but fun at the same time :)
Manchester, its really come into its own lately & hosts a plethora of shops, visit the Arndale centre its ace, (the Trafford centre is a must) there is also a christmas market at this time of year too, so you have Italian, German & French stalls selling delicious street food from hot dogs to pancakes.
Also...check out Cardiff, a really lively, happening city with tonnes to see & do, its also a stones throw away from England across the border so is worth visiting for that reason alone...
Hope this helped :) |

It really depends when your going...Most of these places will be a bit miserable this time of year. I have lived in/visited England several times and these are my favorites:
I LOVE Cambridge. From London Kings Cross you can be there in 45 minutes on a fast train. They have a great city center and in minutes you be in the country.
I strongly suggest Bath, do the bus tours once you are there to acclimate yourself with the area and then you can walk around and explore for yourselves. I would not recommend taking the bus tours from London to Bath because it is not enough time to really see everything.
Last year we visited Portsmouth for the first time and the Royal Navy Shipyards. We also went to the Isle of Wight for a couple of days which is a ferry ride from Portsmouth.
While in London you could take a touristy get on get off boat down the Thames (very inexpensive) and visit Greenwich - great area and there is the Royal Observatory and the GMT line. |

Salisbury, Winchester, Exeter, Truro, Bristol/Bath.
Also, if you are from the USA, stop off at Plymouth, between Exeter and Truro.
There are also many amazing countryside, and seaside resorts near the City's mentioned, especially those in the Exeter, Plymouth, Truro area.
The following link will show many beautiful places in the areas of Devon and Cornwall, in the SW England.
