i suspect you will get answers from people who have only ever used one type of sat nav, saying theirs is the best.

well, I have used the latest garmin and 4 versions of the tom tom sat nav.

Tom Tom wins hands down, in my opinion, for ease of use and being able to be configured with POI's and speed cam locations (I pay a subscription to add speed cam updates to mine, from http://www.pocketgpsworld.com )

Buy a map. Cost 3.99

Learn to read said map.

Cheap, fast, and smart.

I'm not convinced any of them are much good.
For main roads - it's easy to use a map anyway.
For country back lanes - they are not reliable. This is why here and there around the country you find signs put up saying 'Ignore sat nav - this road does not lead to XXX' because local people have got fed up with traffic sent down tiny or muddy lanes getting stuck or causing blockages. There have also been cases of people using them driving onto railway lines or into rivers, getting them the nickname 'prat-nav'.
