What is a noun that can be used to specifically describe people from the UK as a whole? |
Like for people of the US as a whole it's Americans, for people of Canada as a whole it's Canadians, etc.
I know people like to be referred to by their sub-country, but what if you wanted to describe the people of the whole large country all at once?
What do the news say?
And I'm looking for a NOUN here, remember that. Must be a noun. Additional Details Humans won't work, because that could be used to describe ALL people in the world. I mean specifically people from the UK, but not divided into sub-countries. |

Although Great Britain and the UK are not identical (the UK consisting of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland), you'd have to use Britons as a noun, since there's no noun or adjactive referring to people from the whole of the UK.
Of course, as Lochlain says, you could still go with "Her Majesty's most loyal subjects residing within the British Isles..."
...I kind of like the sound of that...

The whole of the UK CAN be classed as British. Those born in NI are classed as British - if they so wish, or Irish, if they so wish under the Anglo Irish Accord. BUT they are all entitled so British does work...
and those of you saying 'English' wow - get a grip, try calling a Scotsman, Welshman or N Irish person English and see what you get!! |

The word you are looking for is British ... that is the same as American or Canadian, and can be either a noun or an adjective. 'He is British,' or 'He is one of the British people,' would both be grammatical sentences. |

Not all people from the UK are English or British.
UK citizens is the best I can come up with. I invite you to coin the phrase. Kingdians? UKers? Her Majesty's Subjects is too contrived and doesn't roll off the tongue. |
