In Manchester, we don't have two initial letters- it's just M
so a postcode could be M1 2AB
M stands for Manchester
1 stands for the district in Manchester
2 stands for the region within that district
AB stands for that particular road/ area

One or two letters for the area. one or two numbers for the sub area, with the possibity of a letter in london, another number and two letters for the street.
AB12 3CD is a postcode, but you can have AB1C 2DE in london. (london's first two letters depend on which direction from the centre the district lies (so NW, SE, etc).
The First two letters depend on the area (it relates to the nearest adminsatrative town). the numbers and letters after that are assigned by the post office based on distance from the centre of the aministrative town.
