The Towns around London, which have more than just a Pizza Hut, KFC, Burger King and McDonald's on their High Streets. Places which still managed to keep some character:
- Canterbury
- Sevenoaks (almost)
- Royal Tunbridge Wells
- Windsor
- Kingston
- Hastings
- Lewes
- St. Albans
- Oxford
- Cambridge
- Saffron Walden
- Colchester
and possibly:
- Southend on Sea (for the longest pier in Britain if not in the world, with a railway running its length)
- Rochester (with an interesting castle and cathedral and interesting Docks in Chatham - with a submarine and one of the longest rooms in the world to see)
But for something unusual go for:
- Waddesdon Manor (near Oxford) - a piece of France (a whole chateau belonging to Rotschild family with grounds and a village) in the middle of England. If you combine with shopping in a very unique and cute Bicester Village (http://www.bicestervillage.com/) - should make it a perfect Sunday/Saturday
- Denbies Vineyard - a piece of Tuscany just outside London (Surrey). Just click on http://www.denbiesvineyard.co.uk/ to be really surprised.
A good thing to do is also to join the National Trust or English Heritage - you'll get a great guide with suggestions of different estates to see around England and a free access to them.
Enjoy!

ashridge park in berkhamsted hertfordshire is lovely place, countryside and peace but also good pubs and night life in berkhamsted itself, i live just outside of london and have gone to ashridge a number of times, there is a monument there which you can see wembley and wheel from. there is a large wood, lots of area to play about and coffe shop/girft shop. nearby there are good restaurants as well. if you want something a bit livelier then st albans and watford are good. |

I did a weekend in Bath and Salisbury and loved it. Bath is a beautiful town and of course Stonehenge is quite near.
People rave about the Isle of Wight but I didn't think it was that wonderful. There is Osborne House (Queen Victoria's house) which is excellent but the secenery and the beaches are nothing special.
You could go down to Dover as they have a wonderful castle and lots of nice walks around the cliffs. Dover itself is nothing special but you could also go the Walmer Castle while you're there or go to Canterbury as well.
The Cotswolds is also a great place to go. Lots of quaint little villages and all in all very picturesque. I've only been there on day trips but it's not far from Oxford so you could combine the two for a weekend.
If you're in the habit of going on weekend or day trips from London, if you haven't already done so, can I recommend signing up to English Heritage and the National Trust. Both have lots of historic castles, palaces and houses that are a great excuse for going for a drive in the country to visit. It is definitely value for money to get an annual membership. |

Try NW Essex. Easy drive just up the M11. It is so different from what many think of Essex. Most just think of Southend. Beautiful open countryside. Fantastic towns and villages. Try Saffron Walden, Thaxted, Finchingfield. For wonderful yet cheap pub food, try the pub in Cornish Hall End. Plenty of good hotels and b&b around.
Just a few miles on over the county border is Cambridge which offers almost everything. |

Go for the Cotswolds, but AVOID the road through Oxford like the plague!! 35 miles of one lane bloody windy roads are enough to make you feel like turning back!Cheltenham is nice. Good night life, theatres, 10minutes and you're in the country side. A bit of everything available. |

What're you after? Brighton is home to me and it's great if you want the beach, shopping, cafes, pubs, restaurants, people.
It's known as 'London by the Sea', perhaps you should consider somewhere totally different, if you want a break. You can be in the Brecon Beacons in 2 hours. Go there, refresh yourself. |
