Its proximity to Scotland - apart from that, there's nothing great about England

Britain probably has the best democracy in the entire world.
We all take it for granted - other counties do not.

Britain is one of the prettiest countries in the world.
We all take it for granted - other countries do not.

Try going to somewhere like the south of Spain or a desert area in America etc for a couple of weeks. The first thing you notice when you arrive back is how beautiful and green the countryside is.

It's a bit like your child growing up. You see him everyday and just don't notice. But see your nephew just once a year and the difference is amazing.

It's the same with Britain.
We all love knocking it - but we soon get homesick when we are away.

I'm now 66 years old.
I've visited many countries throughout my life - and I can assure you we live in THE best place in the entire world.

its close to France and has an escape tunnel!

You need to get out in the countryside, its breathtaking, the ancient walks like the Ridgeway and the Wansdyke are amazing places, the stately homes and the ancient monuments plus the forests and parklands are full of history its green and beautiful, even the cities usually have a lot of history alongside the usual shops and nightlife, ok so we also have a few yobs that get all the bloody press and attention, but there is so much more to it than that.

The way you can step out onto a street corner and shout "Gordon Brown is a b*stard" if you feel like it and not get arrested, the way you can dress how you like, see who you like, vote for who you like and the oppourtunities you have here are taken for granted, try any of that in some other countries and you will be in deep trouble, be happy you live in a free country with a free press and you can be an activist openly if you please, its a privelidge you dont get in a lot of places.

how i do agree with bonkymo, it used to be a great country but not any more.

UK is not another term for England for a start. England is part of the UK along with Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland.

English people are no better or worse than any other naitonality.

Happy St Georges Day

Beckywatson...we share a surname, but unlike yourself I know Africa is not a country, it's a continent. It's a bit like saying England is representative of Europe, when it isn't.

Well, for starters, start loving the wonderful history England has. You only have to drive for 15 minutes to find a thousand year old church, an ancient burial ground, an old pub that has been serving beer for 500 years...

The first letter of the name of the country, and the fact that it is home.

English people can be so ungrateful for what they have!

I lived in England for four years and loved it there. The things I enjoyed were the architecture - amazing to see when I come from a relatively 'young' country in terms of architecture.

Also, earning the pound has got to be the best thing ever. When I lived in England, I travelled to 36 other countries for holidays, because the pound is so strong against other currencies, and the flights are so cheap. I found my London born and bred colleagues were often like "what? you're going away again?" - and couldn't quite believe how often or how many places I went, they tended to stick to going to France or Spain - and didn't at all appreciate how close they were to so many amazing places. (I guess when you're from Australia you have a different perspective on proximity).
The shopping is great, the variety of food is great - loads of different variety in both cuisine and price range.
You can drink in the park (in summer - you'd get fined if you did that here!) - you can park facing either direction on the street, you can travel all over London for the price of an Oyster card, you can do whatever you like in England! I spent most of my time in London - and I do realise that's vastly different from the rest of the country - but I think the country itself is very pretty in it's landscape and (outside of London) very welcoming people.
Yes, the weather sucks! But it just makes you appreciate those short summer days much more.

This country is great, that is why it is called 'Great Britain' and not 'Brittany' which is nothing more than a mediocre region of France.
