What is the best beach in the UK for families with young children? |
I know lots of great dramatic beaches, but I am looking for recommendations for beaches that are easily accessible on foot from a car park, have toilet facilities and the water is ok for little ones to play in. Additional Details Thank you for all the contributions. No winner in my book! But I will certainly put them on my list of places to visit. Although Saunton Sands was already a place I can also recommend to others! |

You cannot beat Whitby - especially if you stay in a house right in the town. The parking is a hassle but find somewhere free to park, walk back to your accomodation and forget the car! It's also a very child-friendly and safe town and the beach is lovely. It's our family's favourite place in the world - especially on Goth weekends! It's just amazing and the Goths are fab in their outfits and totally non-threatening. Little kids dress up too. We all love it - including our three children 15, 11 and 8 years. Have a ton of fun! |

Agree that Wollacombe is great for families - with life guards too, there is parking (but you may need to get there early in peak season).
Further along same coast you'll als find beautiful Saunton Sands.
For South West you might like to consider Blackpool Sands (near Dartmouth) or Watergate Bay, North Cornwall (with new Jamie Oliver Fifteen Restaurant}.
But I would go for Holkham, North Norfolk (as seen in Shakespeare in Love), good car park with board walk onto amazing sands & dunes. No loos, but lots of space - take a picnc and coolbox. Then in either direction you have the more traditional resorts of Hunstanton and Wells Next the Sea (great for crab fishing & fish'n'chips) - but don't miss out on the seal boat trips.
Have a great one! |

Get yourself to Northern Ireland, head to Portrush strand on the north coast.
Beautiful white sand and crystal clear blue water!
Carpark at the beach and all facilities within yards......superb.
I can honestly say, I have never come across a more beautiful setting!! |

Woolacombe Bay in North Devon is really fantastic especially with kids. You can get a really good deal at if you get a last minute. Don't know how many kids you have but they are doing a half price caravan deal just now for next week Monday to Friday for £120. You have the pools, entertainment and country side round you to give the kids lots of space and a nightclub for the adults at night. You are a 5 min drive from the beach, plus close enough to Barnstaple to satisfy the serious shopping craving. Woolacombe is a blue flag beach so it's nice and clean.
If you fancy checking out the offers, put woolacombe bay into the yahoo search bar and you will get the site for the parks.

Filey - I have to agree with that one. Fine, soft sand, shallow water, shops for food and spades on the beach and a whole stretch of it is 'dog free'.
Also it is right next to a Haven caravan park - loads of stuff to keep sthe kids amused should the weather no be quite up to playing on the beach. |

Bournemouth in Dorset!
"Bournemouth is renowned for its seven miles of soft, golden sands and sheltered bathing waters. For 2006 we have secured four European Blue Flags and six Seaside Awards recognising the safety and cleanliness of our beaches."
It can be so easy for children to get lost on busy beaches but Bournemouth has come up with a successful solution...
"Kidzone
For your children's safety - and your peace of mind - Kidzone beach safety scheme provides colour-coded Beach Zones with free matching wrist bands for children - so they can be reunited with you quickly. The scheme operates 1st July to the end of the first week in September."
Poole, which is just down the road from Bournemouth also has beautiful, safe beaches. |

If you really want to enjoy and make a present to yourself and family, go south, very south, somewhere in Crete! Well, it is out of the UK boarders, but closer than Cyprus, which was part of the UK till some years ago! |
