depends what you want to do and see - as some one who actually lives here I think there's no place better than the western Islands for visitors, bit expensive and difficult to get around but i dont' think there's anywhere else like it on earth.

Mainland - well everywhere in Central Scotland - Edinburgh Glasgow, Perth Stirling, are so close to each other it's only an hour or so on a train to each from each. They all have things to do and see.

Or if your'e up for a challenge and want to say you've been up the biggest hill in the UK go up to Fort William and Climb Ben Nevis - it's not that hard, can be up and down in a day easily.

depends how long for, best advice is hire a car for a week, arrive in glasgow, drive up the west coast, along loch ness and down the east to edinburgh.

The M1 out. No, Scotland is a fantastic place: I love Edinburgh (if it's still running, do "The Ghost and Torture Tour", which includes a visit to the Underground City). The countryside too is wonderful, just watch out for the midges: they drive you bananas, got teeth like piranhas.
