What is the cheapest way to get from London to Scotland?

I want to get to Scotland from southern London and I want it to be as cheap as possible. I thought about Hitch Hiking but I heard it's illegal to hike on the main motorways. I don't mind the walk if I know I have a place to sleep...

There are very cheap bus links but if you book waaaaaay in advance the budget airlines (like Easyjet can be just as cheap).

Very occasionally hire companies pay folks to drive one-way can hires back to the original point. Try phoning some of the hire-car companies in London to see if they have any slots.

Have fun and remember your passport :-)

Its actually cheaper to fly from london to scotland that by taking any other mode of transport, make sure you compare prices and look out for special deals from bmi, esyjet and ryanair.

I used to hitch hike many moons ago ... wouldn't do it now though unless there is two of us. If you have to, use service stations. Ask lorrydrivers where they are going and make sure you know your route. Have boards with destinations. You can hitch hike on the sliproads.
I found this on car sharing:

Wouldn't suprise me if flying was cheaper though. And definitly safer than hitch hiking on your own.
