What is the dirtiest, most polluted, industrial city in all of England?

I realise most heavy industry is dead today, but it does exist still in pockets around England's traditionally recognised manufacturing centres. Therefore, which of England's industrial cities is still a very polluted, dirty, and ugly place?

And exactly what heavy industry is there in London or Birmingham to cause pollution ????? They might both be dumps in some peoples opinion, but they aren't polluted except by traffic.
The real answer I would have thought was somewhere in Tees-side, possibly Middlesborough - due to the proximity of Redcar steel works and ICI Billingham chemical works, amongst a lot of other heavy industries.

Birmingham is a dump. Has the highest suicide rate in the UK too.

Actually, did you realise you are talking about an issue that is on an island that is small enough so you are really speaking about a shared environment?

The answers I keep coming up with when I'm searching are Manchester & London.

i know it used to be sheffield at one time because of all the factories/industrial trade etc but that has gone now.
hartlepool is quite bad and middlesbrough is known as "smoggy" so it must be quite bad too.

i would think Birmingham or London

I live in the North of England and have only been as far south as London so i haven't got much knowledge about cities further south than London. But from what I have seen of Industrial cities up in the north such as Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Teeside, Middlesborough, Sunderland etc. I have noticed that Tesside and Middlesborough have been overaken by their industrial sites. Long chimneys and smog can be seen. As cities though they are both improving tremendously, their universities are becoming more popular and attractions to the cities are increasing too. But the appearance of the industrial sites has the power to dismay.
