Ooh, I get you!

The UK is divided into 4 countries - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Then they're kinda divided up into regions - South-east, South, West

Then there's COUNTIES - West Sussex, Manchester, Brighton.

Then there's Towns/Villages

So, an English address would be

Mr John Smith - Name
12 Bakers Street - Street
Dormansland - Town
Surrey - County
RH3 4KJ - Postcode

(^^ Just an example)

Ed
The big island containing England, Scotland and Wales (and the offshore islands which are territorially part of those 3 countries) is called Great Britain.

Northern Ireland is to the north of the Irish Republic. The Republic is a sovereign nation state. Northern Ireland, together with the island of Great Britain, make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Each of the 4 countries in the UK is further divided into administrative counties, though on a local level, some cities and large towns may not be administered by the county in which they are located, but have their own local government.

Scotland formerly had counties (some still use the names of these counties) but is today administered in more modern regions.

Divisions and Sub Divisions (with examples) below:

Counties (Surrey, East Sussex etc).

County or District Council (Tandridge District Council, Surrey)

Borough Councils (London Borough of Westminster)

Parish Council (archaic hangover from the past, but often have covenants on properties forcing owners to contribute to parish expenses such as church repairs: can be legally challenged, without too much difficulty).

City Councils (City of London)

The UK is England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland altogether,

Britain is England, Scotland & Wales altogether,

Your question isn't clear. Contrary to first answer, there are no counties in Scotland.

If you say so...
