£7 ($14) for a 3 mile journey on a Friday night.

Taxi firms in Edinburgh have defended the cost of their fares saying they reflect the high standard of the city's fleet of black cabs.
It follows a newspaper investigation which found catching a cab in Scotland was more expensive than in Paris, Tokyo and New York.

The research found a three-mile taxi journey on a Friday evening in the capital now costs £7 on average.

Earlier this month fares rose by an extra 7% in Edinburgh.

The investigation of 19 cities included Glasgow, which had a £5.13 fare for a three mile trip on a Friday evening, put Edinburgh in the top five for the most expensive taxi journeys in the world.

Only Oslo, Geneva, Osaka and London, were dearer.

Taxi drivers have denied claims that they are profiteering from the high fares and stressed that they were cheaper than in rural areas.

John Sutherland, Edinburgh's City Cabs secretary, said: "It is irrelevant what other cities are doing.

"Edinburgh is renowned for its fleet, which is kept in check by a very strict cab office.

"We are very proud of our lovely fleet of taxis."

Murray Fleming, Edinburgh's Central Taxis secretary, said: "The perception is that Edinburgh's taxis are more expensive than anywhere else in Scotland but this is just not the case.

"What annoys cabbies here in Edinburgh is that the buses can put their fares up by 25% and nothing is said.

"We had the first fleet of taxis with wheelchair access in Europe and the average age of our taxis stand up to any city in the UK.

"Edinburgh is an expensive place to live."

He added: "I would question the methodology of these figures because from statistics on the Private Hire and Taxi Monthly website the average cost across all tariffs puts Edinburgh in 158th place in the UK."

The Scotsman investigation found that the most expensive city in the world to make a trip at 1900 BST on a Friday was Oslo, at £11.30.

depends on where you are going if its just short 10 min trips about 6 pounds black hackney cabs are always more and that's all you see in the city but they have a great bus service and train that's much cheaper hope this helps have a nice day?

depends how far you want to travel and what company you are using. festival cabs is cheap but they are a private hire company. get their number online.

Muzikman
you should be able to pick up an 03 reg Skoda for about £4000 but the white plate will cost you a tidy sum if you are planning on doing it for a living

Natty-Lea
You are better off using the buses. A day ticket costs about £2.50 (just over $5) - and you are free to jump on and off them all day long. They're great value. :-)

Jim
Minimum fare is around $4 and increases with time and distance. Average fares are $20 to $30 depending on your destination.

Jay C
It costs me about £40 to get 12 miles home on a Friday or Saturday night from Edinburgh.
Not sure what that is in dollars about $60 ish.

Petrol(gasoline) is rather expensive here compared to the U.S so fares reflect that. E.g if you were to travel 3 miles it would cost you about£7.00 -$14.00 the buses are good here so a taxi wouldn't really be necessary if you were just on holiday as they run from early in the morning to late at night. If you can give a specific departure and arrival point (airport to city centre?) I could give you a more accurate answer.

Depends where your travelling to - Edinburgh to Glasgow 50miles costs about £80, around $160

It depends on how far you are going obviously. There is usually around £2 ($4) on the meter when you get in. You can call a private firm and get a fixed price if you are going quite far but the black cabs are pretty resonable. You probably wouldn't pay more than £10 ($20) for a trip in the centre but as I said it depends on the time of day, traffic and distance.
