What is the problem with the english judicial system and transport for london?

so how does this sound people? a criminal record for not paying a bus fare, instead of just getting a penalty, you get summoned to a magistrates court, pay 100 pounds for the administration for TfL, up to 1000 pounds in fines and a criminal record... dont these people have better things to do?

People who do not pay their proper bus fares are both theives and fraudsters.

So, it is quite right that, when caught, fare evaders are taken to court and get the criminal record they richly DESERVE. Moreover, it is only proper that the convicted criminal then has to pay part of the administration costs incurred by TfL.

The "penalty", as you so quaintly put it, is the criminal record. If that is acting as a deterrant, then it is being effective.

Consider yourself lucky, in Muslim countries they have a simple remedy for theives - they chop your hand off.

truluv exists!
heres a radical concept - pay your fare and you have no worries!
i have no sympathy for fare evaders, they force the fares up for everyone else.

manxbiker
it is a criminal offence to avoid paying your fare on the buses the same goes for the trains as well that is why you would have a criminal record

Darran J
you could always avoid it by paying the bus fare. It's a lot cheaper.

Simple answer, when in London England, don't try to avoid paying the fare, because it's tantamount to theft.

If you don't like to pay your way, then stay at home or walk. When your 70 years old you can then get free bus travel from the council.

Why do you think the fines have been set so high in the first place.

They both have CAPITAL letters!

WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT THAT?!

Why not just pay the fare. It's stealing, theft is a criminal offence.

Fred3663
TfL
Penalty fares are only issued in circumstances where the
passenger has been unable to produce a ticket for the
journey being made. If the Inspector suspects that this is
as a result of a deliberate attempt to avoid paying the
fare, then the matter is likely to be reported for prosecution
as opposed to dealing with it by way of a penalty fare.

Sounds ridiculous but then money is always more important than people in this country.
