The term has its origin in 1800s when there were a few specific days on which the banks were legally closed.
This meant the public were allowed a day holiday which was not all that common in the 1800s.
The May bank holiday became known as the Workers Holiday and has become to represent workers around the world, being a holiday in most countries. |

It's classed as a bank holiday, as in the banking fraternity.
This is may day, which used to be called in England
Empire Day, meant to celebrate the British Empire.
It was said that the sun never set on the British Empire and we were given a day off for this. |

Prior to 1834, the Bank of England observed about thirty-three saints' days and religious festivals as holidays, but in 1834, this was reduced to just four: 1 May, 1 November, Good Friday, and Christmas Day.
In 1871, the first legislation relating to bank holidays was passed "the Bank Holiday Act 1871" which specified the days. The guy (sir John) who devised the days was an enthusiastic supporter of cricket and was firmly of the belief that Bank Employees should have the opportunity to participate and attend matches when they were scheduled. Included in the dates of Bank Holidays are therefore dates when cricket games are traditionally played between the villages in the region where Sir John was raised. |

I don't know about the story behind it but it seems reasonable coz how could businesses function with the banks closed ? So when they close, for whatever reason,it seems logical that it is a public holiday too.
Makes sense? |

The tradition started here in England. The banks closed - no one could do business - or at least many businessmen couldn't. So they all decided to take the day off and some even let the servants have a day off too. The tradition survives - but now we have more "bank holidays" dictated by governments rather than banks. Actually, it was the Bank of England that dictated bank holidays originally. In the days they really "promised to pay the bearer the sum of ...." |

It is the day that the federal reserve is close. The federal reserve is closed about 10 holidays a year. If a holiday falls on a Sunday it is usually the following Monday that they take the holiday. |

A Bank Holiday is a public holiday in the United Kingdom and also in the Republic of Ireland. Although there is no legal right to time off on these days, the majority of the population not employed in essential services (e.g. utilities, fire, ambulance, police, health-workers) receive them as holidays; those employed in essential services usually receive extra pay for working on these days. Bank holidays are so called because they are days upon which banks are (or were) shut and therefore (traditionally) no other businesses could operate. Legislation allows certain payments to be deferred to the next working day.
There's loads more on the site!! |

The banks are closed when the Fed is closed, however did you know that the federal reserve cannot be closed more than 72 consecutive hours. That is why banks are not closed the day after Thanksgiving, ha you all thought it was due to Black Friday. |
