What is the ugliest, nastiest, dirtiest, and scummiest neighborhood in London?

As an American, I would really like to know. Thank you in advance.

We don't really have neighbourhoods as bad as that here. I live in Harlesden, which no doubt many people would vote for, but it is really pretty prosperous and harmonious compared to neighbourhoods of Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami etc. that I have seen. People in the UK, particularly those who don't even live in London, like to complain (and be racist - all the neighbourhoods mentioned by other posters have sizeable non-white populations), but in reality, for its size, London is a paradise compared to other cities worldwide. We welcome everyone, even the narrow-minded little suburbanites who complain that London is so awful, but whose only idea of a good time in London is throwing up on a Soho pavement on a friday night...

Westminster, particularly Downing St.

Any house in any of the scummiest places mentioned on here would not get you much change from $200,000 so how bad can they be?

My award for the ten scummiest are as follows...

1. Graham park in NW London
2. Peckham
3. Deptford
4. South Tottenham
5. Bow
6. Plaistow
7. Mile End
8. Hackney
9. Vauxhall
10. North Kensington

The way London developed as a series of villages which got incorporated into the wider Greater London area means that there are prosperous bits in all ares so there are no areas which are all bad or all good. Often what some would consider to be the worst housing and area is less than a few hundred metres from some of the best. Look around - you will be pleasantly surprised.

Southall . spit every 4 inches of pavement - rats in the streets at night time and chewing gum every 2 inch of pavement. However I wish to emphasise that its the fault of the hundreds of tourists especially weekends

All those previously mentioned, plus Deptford, Newcross,
Thamesmead, and the majority of tower hamlets.

Totally dysfunctional residents, rat infested, and a muggers paradise, but other than that, there OK really.

Its all pretty vile.

But taking the train anywhere from Greenwich along the South Bank of the river to Victoria is depressing enough to make you take your own life.
