What is there to do in LONDON...?

I'm there for a week and I am aware of all the famous tourist attractions: Buckingham Palace, the Parks, the wax museum, the many many museums, the tower bridge, cathedrals etc..

Perhaps those of you who have been there / live there maybe can tell me some cool unknown places to go that I won't find in a guidebook?

And is there anything you WOULDN'T recommend?

Tobacco dock just off the highway near Tower Bridge. Interesting shops and restaurants. Greenwich market and the meriden line, always good fun. Fleet street, see the 'Wig and Pen' pub, it's where Charles Dickens used to drink and meet his contemporaries., and in the same street, the 'Cheshire Cheese Pub'. Borough Market near Southwark Cathedral, full of fabulous stalls selling the freshest foods from around the world and such characters behind the stalls! Portobello road market open Mon' Wed' Fri' and Saturday.
EDIT: Try this website. www.hiddenlondon.com

I wouldn't recommend Madame Tussauds - tourist tat rip off joint as far as I'm concerned. I also wouldn't recommend the hop on hop off bus tour. Much cheaper and better to buy a one day travel card and at least you can use the tube if there's lots of traffic. I would recommend Harrods especially the food hall (and to laugh at the gaudy statue of Dodi and Diana). Hyde Park is a nice place to walk through. Covent Garden in the evening is quite buzzy with bars and usually street entertainers esp in the summer. It's worth a trip out to Canary Wharf on the DLR just to see all the new architecture and have a wander around. The river buses are fun as is wandering around Greenwich.

Why not search out one of the 'Ghost Tours'? At least with these you will have a guide....and , as everyone else has mentioned, try and stick with a group of people, in well poulated areas. Oh, and be prepared for everything being very expensive!!!

Below is real London-:
The Victorian clink prison, clink street, borough SE1.
Docklands museum, Hertsmere rd, canary wharf
Ragged school museum, Victorian children in London. Copperfield road E1
Try searching for the tree of death in st Jame's park (i know where it is)
Whitechapel bell foundry, very interesting,
Whitechapel art gallery
Museum of London, London wall

Museum of childhood, Bethnall green.
Pudding lane, where the great fire of London started.
The pirate gravestone in st Georges church yard, complete with skull and cross bones, wapping E1, But you'll have to look hard to find it.
The crypt at spitafields church, commercial street E1

Try visiting Pelicchies cafe in bethnal green road, the best breakfast in London, and try working out who all the people are in the photos on the wall, clue.....two of them lived next door in valance road, as famous or infamous as London gets.

markets are quite good to see a different side to the Capital, you probably know or have heard of Camden Market, stalls, cafe's, restaurants, bars, plenty to see and do. Portobello road is worth a visit on saturday, antiques, but also food stalls, cafe's etc. And sunday a walk down to Petticoat Lane near Liverpool Street, mostly clothes, good for leather goods at one end of market near Aldgate.
Covent Garden is always buzzing, particularly at weekends, live music, stalls for bric a brac, just sit and watch the people go by, its nice. Take a trip up river to Greenwich, you get a great picture of London, far different to what you expect and if lucky will get the good tour guide who will tell you some of its history. Goes from Westminster, or Charing Cross and is worth it. Greenwich has the Maritime museum and also a market at weekends. Number of nice pubs too.
Southwark Cathedral is a must, because it one of Londons oldest, and it very beautiful, which is also on the south bank, and nearby is the Anchor Pub, a pub with lots of history. Famous people who drank there over the centuries.
Globe Theatre a recreation of a Shakespeare theatre, also on the south bank, walk inside on go back hundreds of years to Elizabethan England, which was fascinating often in a gruesome way.
perhaps none of this is your thing, well i can say it has someting for everyone. If you need more info mail me, can give you further details.

London Eye is a must, birds eye view up there, its on South Bank and plenty to do around that area, festival hall for gallieries, lunch, and music in evening.

What people say about being careful is true but its no worse than other major cities.

When you tire of London, you tire of life.

Mellow-Magic
do all main sites first, i'd leave museums till the end coz they are like any other museum.
Kew gardens is nice for a break from the city
Covent Garden is great for shopping
have fun!!!!!!

London is great but be careful at night stick to the main areas there's some dodgy looking weird people walking about Soho talking to themselves and a lot of junkies. Don't let that put you off you need to live.

Do everything you mentioned its all good but also you cant visit London without travelling the underground but make sure your not alone always stick to were there are plenty of people. Have a nice trip.

I cant think of anywhere you are likely to want to see that others have not such as a 'cool' place.
probably something along lines of visiting the HMS Belfast on the Thames or the Russian Sub further along maybe?
I would avoid the Bridge (Tower) as its very high cost and frankly is a bit tame and boring. You get in a lift go up one support tower walk across the walkway and down the other side, then exit via the 'pump' station. Not a bad 6 minutes but cost versus interest is not really worth it.
do enjoy your visit. Oh a really silly place may be? a small public house along the Thames sadly I cannot recall it's name but it i famous for bringing a well known plant (flower) to the UK form abroad now common in gardens all over and a 'supposed' murder. it sits near a riverside park not far from chadwell and is On the river front. it has a lot of American visitors and does some nice and pricey lunches.

Try eating at Wong Kei at 41-43 Wardour Street. Take cash as they won't take anything else. It is cheap food. The place is famous for having the most rude staff in the world. From there take the 3 minute walk to Leicester Square and look for the half price ticket booth in the centre of the square. It offers reduced prices on any tickets still available for that nights performances in the west end.
I worked in Soho, London for five years and the one place I wouldn't visit is London. I would visit Manchester or Newcastle, or Birmingham or anywhere else for that matter! Actually Chiltern Trains were offering a 5 pound off peak fare from London to Birmingham leaving from Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill. That might be a good cheap day out and show you a bit of a contrast and the second biggest city in the UK. Good luck to you.
