Although I love many of London's museums and galleries, one stands out because it's so extraordinary: the Soane Museum (known properly as Sir John Soane's Museum). It stands facing Lincoln's Inn Fields, in the lawyers' district of Holborn in central London, and is made up of three domestic terraced houses.

Why I've singled it out... ? Oh, I have *such* a soft spot for it...
Because it is one man's life-work.
Because it shows how great collections came about, such as those that formed the hearts of the British Museum, Natural History Museum and the V&A.
Because it is an architectural maze crammed from floor to ceiling with artefacts -- the picture gallery actually has walls that fold back in great panels to allow three times more pictures to be displayed than normal maths would allow.
Because it contains gems at every turn: original drawings by the architect Robert Adam, sketches by Hogarth, paintings by Canaletto, an Egyptian pharaoh's tomb, and so much more.
It's a complete delight to visit. Every time I go, I find something new, not least because the light changes with the passing hours and seasons.
And because they do evening tours by candlelight!
The museum's website is http://www.soane.org/

I do hope you're asking this because you're planning a visit to London. If so, have a wonderful time!

Love from a Londoner born and bred. =D

Me
I love the natural history museum, i could stay in there forever it never gets boring. The Tate is good as well but i prefer the latter.

Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath. All the pictures are by British artists like Gainsborough etc and the setting of the building in landscaped gardens surrounded by Hampstead Heath, is gorgeous.

It has to be the British Museum, so full of stuff, so diverse and always changing to prevent stagnation.

The Horniman Museum - down Saarf in Forest Hill. I live practically next door, and the collection is fantastically eclectic.
