In London you will find a huge selection of restaurants with food from all over the world. London is very cosmopolitian.
In a survey recently I think Indian food (curries) came out as being a favorite typical meal in UK now!.
However if you are looking for "traditional" English food in London, then of course Fish and Chips is one, try to go into the suburbs and not to a touristy type fish and chips shop which you will find in Central London.

You could try Pie Mash and Liquor ( a green gravy) from a traditional Pie and Mash shop (you will find a good one in Greenwich) or even JellIied Eels!

Roast Beef with Yorshire pudding can be found in many pubs often on Sundays. (The French nickname for the English is "le Rost beuf" as they assosiate the British with roast beef dinners, we, the English nickname them "the Frogs" as we imagine them to be eating frogs legs!)
Roast lamb with mint sauce is also fairly English.

Cornish pasties are availble in Convent garden and other places and are also an English "take away" which originate from Cornwall.

When asked what food should be considered the national food of England, Prime Minister Tony Blair suggested Chicken Tikka Masala, an Indian dish.

While you can still get "traditional" English food like fish and chips, bubbles and squeak, or shepherd's pie in pubs and restaraunts in London, international cuisine of all types is far more common. From Turkish to Indian to Italian to Greek to Spanish, you can find it all in London- and at far more reasonable prices than you often find in the U.S. For example, if you have a small group and walk down Brick Lane (an area famous for its Indian cuisine), shop owners will literally stand in the street and "haggle" for your business, competing with one another by offering discounts, free wine or appetizers, and other bonuses.

If international food isn't your favorite, you can always find "safe" options like burgers and "chips" (fries) and pizza in most pubs. You'll also find American familiars like McDonalds, Burger King, and KFC.

England is infamous for bad food, but I think that is changing.

The stereotypical food is fish and chips, and pub food, such as bangers (sausages) and mash, as well as a lot of Indian food (lots of expatriates from the former colony live there.) Being a cosmopolitan city, there are lots of places that serve good food that is fresh and healthy.

London is one of the most International cities in the world ,you can find restaurants of just about every culture.in the world

Vera Swami is a famous Indian restaurant ,and there are many of those .
Also many good Chinees restaurants or Italian

typical English is Fish and chips ,but it is not the best food .but cheap
Roast beef and yorkshire pudding is typical and nice .

you will find good food in the Bars ,like sheppards pie ,and meat pies,

but the wine bars are more sophisticated ,with a large variety of cold meats ,salads and cheeses

you can eat like a king in London and everyday different for a year if you want.

Boiled stuff is typical.

If you're visiting, your best bet is fish and Indian food. Everything else is so-so or boring or bad or high-priced.

London has fantastic food you can find absolutely everything you want. whatever it is - seriously. Soho has a few nice places, as does Angel and you should try brick lane too fo a bit of the ethnic thing. London is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Curry, kebabs, fish 'n' chips, pasties, hotpots, bangers 'n' mash....how can you go wrong?
Oh! but I would avoid their burgers and pizzas. They really can't make them.

darkness_returns
There's no real 'typical' food in London anymore. I'm sure if you asked a large majority of it's residents thier fave food they'd say indian or something. There are however Fish and Chip shops, not chips as you call them here in USA but thicker fries with deep fried battered fish. If you can find a good one of those it's good. In central london eating out can get very pricey but not always deservedly so. My friend and I when I lived there went for a steak dinner in town and got very ripped off, "Do you want fries with your meal sir" yes cost us an extra 2 pounds....

cgdchris
we have all cultures and there fore all foods some of the best restaurants in Europe are in London 4 out of the top 10 including the second best..i am a chef we have students from all over the world who come here to learn cooking. Indian food is very popular and is very good
its a old view of England the home of bad food we all talk like the queen and have bad teeth get real its not a modern view of one of the best cities in the world

mdk_kincaid
england is known for fish and chips. it's kind of like long john silvers but they wrap it up in a piece of newspaper. other than that, I 've heard it really does have some bad food , but they also have some american cuisine.
