The people, the good people that is not the "cant be bothered to work" types. England is a very old country that has been invaded by many different cultures over the centuries, this has given us a great nation of people who are tough and quite resourceful. We have the best Engineers, military forces and scientists in the world, we had the best explorers and discoverers of new worlds and trade routes, still, we have a unique assumption that we are all English when in fact a very small percentage of us can truly call ourselves English in the pure sense. We have one of the best national health services in the world and for everyone who would like to argue that point go and get ill in the USA or South America or pretty much anywhere else in the world without medical insurance! we have a very good (if overabused) welfare system whcih some may again not accept, but maybe they should try not earning any money in other countries, we still have one of the best education systems in the world, and allot of that is due to the dedication of the people in it. So for me, its not one thing, its the people that make England special. The mad, eccentric, crazy but ultimately brilliant English people.

A unique mix of Celts and Germans, who won't admit to being either.

Good for you Graham!
The Country must be pretty special or why else are there long queues of would-be immigrants wanting to come here?
My suggestion (wait for the thumbs-down!) is that we pair up every would-be immigrant with a Brit who who dislikes this Country and everything it stands for, and let them swop Countries!
Problem solved! We keep the population stable and we have loyal inhabitants who think that England is a special place.

the way in which you can come here and be part of the culture if you wish,
our family came to these shores in the 1500s and we've done well to blend in.
my advice to any newcomers, would be to learn the language well and try to get on with those around you... our family, like most others in the uk were newcomers to england at one time, is it for us, a few generations later to pull the welcome mat on the new comers?

The characters of the people who live here, the problem is caused by moaning working class thirty somethings who are always moaning about moving away, they are a bit right wing or something, they are worse than any chav or doley that I ever met (at least a chav has a personality). They can't see that they are the problem in this country.

Doors Fan
Catherine Cookson.

I started reading her novels when I was about 16 years old, and became a great fan of hers.

I would always envision the houses, the towns, the countryside...

I visited the UK a couple of years ago, and I found the country to be the most beautiful and charming place on earth.
