Marmite, red buses, experiencing four seasons in one day, the beach at Whitley bay, fish and chips, Sunday morning car boot sales, the Tate, London eye...shall i go on?! There are so many negative things that we could all moan about but in contrast we have so many positive things that we take for granted. |

The Great in Great Britain does not mean great as in good rather great as in big (or bigger than before in this case)
As in Greater Britain (just like Greater London)
It was renamed Great britain after the union with Scotland in 1707 as it now encompassed a wider area than the previous britain.
Prior to that is was simply known as Britain.
It is now known as the United kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland after NI was included |

Great comes from the old saying;
'Great...we'll just go to Britain and we can get all the money we need, and all the medical care we need for nothing!' |

Because it's above Lesser Britain. (Now Brittany)
Greater Britain and Lesser Britain.
"In Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (circa 1136), the island of Great Britain was referred to as Britannia major ("Greater Britain"), to distinguish it from Britannia minor ("Lesser Britain"), the continental region which approximates to modern Brittany. The term "Bretayne the grete" was used by chroniclers as early as 1338, but it was not used officially until James I proclaimed himself "King of Great Britain" on 20 October 1604 to avoid the more cumbersome title "King of England and Scotland".
In Irish, Wales is referred to as An Bhreatain Bheag which means, literally, 'Little Britain', although a truer translation would be Britain Minor. However, the closely related Scottish Gaelic uses this term, "A'Bhreatainn Bheag", to refer to Brittany." |

'Britannia ruled the seas' and up to the middle sixties they had many colonies and possessions. They were the great Super Power at one time but since they do not have to deal with their Dominion, they deescalated. Also realize that after the Industrial Revolution about everything was 'Made in England'
What makes them really GREAT is the fact that the civilized world now speak ENGLISH ! |
