What place is the centre of england?

Meriden is historically reputed to be, as several answers below suggest. There is a plaque there which claims it is - but it is no longer officially recognised as the centre!. One can work out the centre by cutting out a map of England in cardboard and seeing if you can get it to balance on a point. This is the 'centre of gravity'. But actually there are many ways to calculate depending on whether one takes account of islands for example, or calculate the place furthest from the sea (somewhere in Derbyshire apparently). Wikipedia has details. The Ordnance survey now says that the centre (of gravity) of England is actually Fenny Drayton, Leicestershire (11 miles from Meriden) and I would guess thats now the closest to an 'official' answer.

I think the point in England that is furthest from the sea is Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire .Whether it's the most central point in the country I don't know

Inthera
No the futhermost point is not in Derbys it is in Bucks

Well, apparently, according to the BBC News (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2323451.stm) the geographic centre of England is in a paddock at Lindley Hall Farm (near Fenny Drayton, Leicestershire), owned by Charles and Margaret Farmer - and not Meridien!

Hope that helps.

The centre of England is a place called Weedon in Northamptonshire, it is exactly midway between the coasts. During the wars, gunpowder and amunition was stored there, the warehouses are still there.

Greenwich England!

Actually... I like a "fish & chips" place I found near Pickidille Circus!

I do believe its a little village called Meriden near to Coventry. I wouldnt swear to that and with the shifting shores, it may well not be any more. Have a look on the net chick.
