The best football team in Ayrshire is definately Ayr United , who's home is Somerset Park. There is a great rivalry between them and Kilmarnock FC (known as 'Killie') , their home is Rugby Park. Ayr Utd's nickname is "The Honest Men" , a tenious link to the National bard Rabbie Burns , who hailed from Alloway , just outside the town centre. The Burns Statue Square is at the town centre. About 5 miles South, is the old Butlins Camp , an old RN shore base which was known as HMS Scotia. Ayr itself is a lovely little town with a great foreshore and sandy beach. The harbour is a neat little haven. |

Ayrshire is in south-west Scotland. It was previously in Strathclyde region, but this has not existed for a while as Scotland now has 32 unitary authorities - i.e. local council areas. |

"Ayrshire is a former county in south-west Scotland, located on the shores of the Firth of Clyde. Its principal towns include Ayr and Kilmarnock. It became part of the kingdom of Scotland during the 11th century. In 1263, the Scots successfully drove off a group of Norwegian Vikings in a skirmish known as the Battle of Largs. A notable historic building in Ayrshire is Turnberry Castle, which dates from the 13th century or earlier, and which may have been the birthplace of Robert the Bruce. The Ayrshire breed of cattle originated here, prior to 1800. The newly created Strathclyde administrative Region included Ayrshire in 1975. When the two-tier system was abandoned, Ayrshire split into the council regions of East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, and North Ayrshire, although the later also includes Buteshire. Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, serving Glasgow, Scotland, is located in Ayrshire."

Ayrshire is one of the ancient counties of Scotland. It is situated on the south west coast. The northern boundary is 500 yards south of Wemyss Bay Station. The southern boundary is at Finnarts Gate, about five miles north of Stranraer. It extends inland to such exotic sounding places as Floak (on the A77), Glenbuck (on the A70) or Loch Doon (on the A712).
Ayrshire is now divided, for local government purposes, into East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire.
Anyone who tells you that Ayrshire is part of Strathclyde is talking out the back of their ....... |
