What should I expect when moving to UK? |
I am an American who will be going either to Cheltenham, England or Edinborough, Scotland (I probably spelled that wrong) to work as an RN if things go as planned. I am coming over with a travel nurse agency. What should I expect as an American living in the UK? If there are any nurses who can answer that would be great too. Additional Details at least you see something for your taxes. I pay 22% in taxes plus i have to pay for medical and dental, high education and daycare costs and i am a slave to my car due to no mass transit where i live so gas is an added tax for me |

Edinburgh is the place to stay although it has it's fair share of tourists the history there is wonderful, do go to the West Coast of Scotland if you want beautiful scenery.
I am a UK registered nurse, make sure you don't end up in a care home this is to avoided at all costs, if possible stay within the NHS although that too has it's drawbacks. If there is any aspect of the work you don't fancy don't accept it, as a foreigner you will be offered poorly paid jobs in bad conditions.ie the jobs nobody else will accept.
On the whole you will love Scotland get out and see the countryside.
I lived in Scotland for 20 years and still miss it. I wish you well in your new home. |

I lived very close to Edinburgh when I was single. I now live in Canada. Edinburgh is a very beautiful, historical city. Lots to see and do. The only problem with the U.K. is the weather, this year they have had no summer at all. Much more expensive than Canada or the U.S. I love all of them. Good luck whatever you decide |

Welcome!
I don't really know much about the specific culture of either of the places you may be moving too. In general though you should be welcomed in a friendly manner, you'll probably be shocked at the amount of binge drinkers most of which are underage and female. On a positive note we have some beautiful coastlines and excellent history which is what I love most about this country, the variety in age of the buildings not all high rise modern architecture. Some great places to visit don't worry about being touristy and i'm afraid it's true, we do have bad weather. |

You have picked some of the better places to come to. Edinburgh is beautiful. I don't know Cheltenham but am familiar with other areas of Gloucestershire. The worst cities are London, Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham and Birmingham. Despite what you read on here, I think most British people are happy to welcome Americans. |

Cheltenham is a very nice town, very small but a tight community, Edinborough is very different, Scotland is as a whole. Cheltneham has a very good University. Cheltneham is in Gloucestershire which is in the South West of the country. I currently live in Badminton which is 10 miles away. Can't realy comment on Scotland as im English.
Bristol is very nice you muppet above, has the best history through out the UK. |
