What should I wear as a college student in london? |
I'm from Singapore, a warm tropical country. Right now i'm in a dilemma on what to bring to London as i'll be heading down there in Sept for my 3 years of law studies.
What essentials should i bring and what is the dress code of the college students of london? (Eg. Footwear, what kind of coats, dressy clothes?) |

London is multi-cultural in race and dress. Wear what you are comfortable with. However, you will need some warm clothing. You will find the weather cold, compared to what you are used to, especially in winter. Temperatures can vary between around - 6 degrees, and +16, Nov. - March: although London usually has better weather than northern regions. Summers are normally changeable; anything from 12 - 30 degrees! Wet or dry. |

The students tend to dress up more. You see a lot of skirts, hats, and scarves. Layers are fantastic. Students do wear jeans but keep them uncut.
The summer weather has been changing. The last 4 weeks has been cold and rainy. Now it is hot and rainy. Bring a jumper or at the very least an umbrella.
Good footwear is essential. Bring comfortable shoes (but not really trainers). Also bring dress up shoes for the nights at the clubs.
Londoners go out more at night and you'll need appropriate club attire so smart casual. |

Bring something smart, then also something that you'd normally wear during your spare time. Shirt, trousers, few pairs of each.. As for footwear, trainers will do, if you like them. You can buy a lot here too, an umbrella or waterproof jacket is a must. Charity shops as one of the previous answerers said are very good and lots of them in London (Oxfam is one of the best). Markets are good too, such as Petticoat Lane is East London (every Sunday) and you can find cheap clothes there. Weather can be cold in winter, last December I remember wearing a downjacket, it was so cold. You tend to see people wearing just about anything in London, you'll blend in very well. |

Wear anything you want to wear....just avoid those stupid sweatshirts with the college name on them. Nothing says "I am a tourist" more than those... |

Students can wear basically whatever they want. If you want to fit in a safe bet would be a t-shirt, jeans and light jacket. The winters can be quite cold so a thick coat is important. The weather is very unpredictable and changes day to day so a thin, light raincoat is good as you can wear it against the rain and not be too hot in the warmer weather or put a fleece or jumper on underneath in the colder weather. Although fashion is quite important in London most students have tight budgets so will 'put-together' outfits themselves, and you will see all sorts of things so don't worry about fitting in. Converse sandshoes and similar shoes are fashionable at the moment and go with loads of things.
A smart jacket and a couple of shirts might be useful for going out at night and with friends, you may want a smart pair of black shoes aswell. A suit is useful for interviews/placements, etc but if you don't have one don't worry about it as you might not use it often. |

hi!,
if you will stay for 3 years make sure you will spend some holidays back to Singapore because you're gonna miss the weather there, take what ever fits you, specially your favourite dress you will be happy to wear them sometimes.if there are no winter clothes in Singapore, bring money to buy it here there are some cheap stores around London. |
