What should the speed limit be on UK motorways?

I drive on motorways and do around 85mph, and yet many cars overtake me. 70mph is so slow on motorways. That speed limit was introduced when cars were really basic and life was at a slower pace.

What speed do you drive at on motorways and what do you believe the speed limit should be?

I personally don't see why the speed limit cannot be 90mph.

I think the speed limit should be raised.
Cars now are getting so much more advanced and the amount of safety equipment etc in a car is unreal, so the amount of 'safety' in a car can withstand more than a 70mph impact. But you also have to consider that not everyone has new cars.
I think aswell as having a maximum speed limit, there should actually be a minimjm speed limit of at least 50mph, but should be over-ruled when there is fog or adverse weather conditions.
The minimum speed limit will be more effective, then:
- not everyone will be slow
- this therefore will make journeys faster, as everyone else is going at or above the minimum speed limit
- Reduces "rubber-necking", or maybe even reduce accidents on roads.
But there is one downturn to this:
- accidents could seem more probable - such as if there is debris or an animal on the motorway, you'll most likely slow down to miss it, or swerve out, hit another car and so on and so forth.
- Not everyone could follow it - most people go over 70mph on the motorway.
- there is already a law on a minimum speed limit on the motorway. (I think, but I'm not sure)

I do think that the government or highways agency needs to review the national speed limit on motorways, as this law has been in force for a long time - with great advances in the car industry, its no wonder that we nearly all go over 70mph on the motorway.

But thats my opinion, and I'm trying not to be biased here

I do 80-85 mph on a clear motorway. But at that the road noise becomes unbearble.

Reason being, are roads are awful. They are old and overused. Go to somewhere like france and I will quite often be doing 110mph without even realising, the roads are new, and empty. (because your paying for it!)

Plus, the accident rates are so high in Britain, so I think in terms of safety the government would not agree.

Besides what does it matter, like you said, most people are doing sort of 80 mph sometimes. The police arent going to arrest and charge everybody. Its not such a big deal, because its different on a motorway.

I say improve the roads first, then we can start thinking about raising the speed limit.

65 - 80mph is a fairly good speed for most modern cars, without drivers needing the skills of Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button to stay in control..... but you've also gotta remember the old adage of driving at a speed that enables you to stop in the distance you can see spouted by advanced driving experts.

I think it should be 90mph, i mean i have never gone that fast not because i don't want t its because i have a crap 1 ltr rover lol

but yh bring up the speed!!

and i also think the limiter on trucks should lifted a little

70mph. And it really annoys me when peeps talk about the fast lane, there is no fast lane, but an overtaking lane.

Evil_Moose
90 would be good yeah cars journey times would be alot shorter

Well the thing is if the legal speed limit would rise to 90mph people would drive at 120mph. So 70 seems pretty decent reminder not to go to fast and those who want to go fast will do that anyway.

Apart from some of the Police and various 'special intelligence agencies' no one in the UK is trained to drive a car at speeds exceeding 50 mph.
Motorway 60 mph for all vehicles, anyone caught doing over 70 should have their vehicle instantly confiscated and be given the bill for crushing it.
The threshold speed for recieving a fatal injury in a car accident is only 19mph!

60 mph is quite adequate and it will save tons of fuel. (On a 100 mile journey, the difference between constant 70mph and constant 60mph is just 14 minutes).

To enforce the speed limit, I would install average speed cameras throughout the motorway network and introduce a new offence of "speeding on a motorway" with a one month driving ban for every 1 mph over the limit for first offenders and prison for frequent offenders.
