The things I miss about England when I'm not there
is not something you can buy...
I miss my friends and going out to concerts and events.
I miss the museums and sights of London... but someone else said about getting DVDs
and I think getting the 'Little Britain' pack
would probably be the best idea! |

i think your friend would probably get quite homesick anyway so why not make him a scrap book of all the things he won't miss about england!?! Burberry, soverign rings, random violence, binge drinking........
although depending on which part of spain he goes to he may encounter even more of this! |

Perhaps you could get photos of family and friends and get them to write a message in an album so when he's fed up he can recall all the friendly faces that will be queueing to visit him in the summer months:)
After 16 years here in Spain the things I miss most are:
1.The library - being able to acquire any book I want when I want it virtually.
2. Available educational courses and hobbies, in the UK most schools have evening classes that are cheap and great. There are no evening classes for adults here that I know of.
3. Cheap shopping and loads more variety and choice. There is no price war here and so very little choice, I usually go mad shopping when I go back to the UK. if you are over 40 in the UK you can still shop in young stores, here the choice is very old fashioned.
4. Family of course, although I do keep in contact by phone, email etc
5. Last but not least Sainsburys own make gravy, I always ask someone to bring a pot or 2 over for me. |

Old Man of Coniston!.

Driving along the idylic countryside, sampling the smell of a spring meadow, my eyes catch a glimpse of some dairy cows resting beneath an old oak. The dry stone wall that marks the boundary from the valley, in which a brook tumbles gracefully, masks the black and white coat of the peaceful herbivores. Lambs bound endlessly nearby in the warm sunshine and swallows wheel and cry in their attemts to catch a bright blue damselfly. The distant farm, just on the crest of a lushes green field, belies its 300 year age as it embodies both the franetic-modern-age and one that began as a tranquil fortress to a hard working class from by-gone times. That thought took me back to days of endless graft, when men ploughed the fields for hours on end and the women balanced life with chores, feeding the animals, milking and binging up the children with avid enthusiasm. As I drove on, huge fields of yellow dominated the landscape, pocketed now and then with small copses. The country lane widened and now I retreated into my dreams as more houses broke the rolling green hills. More houses, the odd car sped past and I soon realised I would be entering the cluttered village. Tiny roundabouts broke the route and parked cars stood like centurians, guarding the road that disappeared under their modern dazzling coats. The traffic noise increased ten-fold in the space of 5 mins. A larger roundabout marked the new centre of the expanding village, one which had grown by 1,550 people this year alone. You could not mistake the mean, moody scowls as the hung around in their tens, expecting the next driver to offer them a job. I shot through the junction to escape the venom, almost causing an accident. The screach of tyres, the hoot of a horn, an angry exlpetive and I was away towards the motorway. Its an hours drive, I might make the 15 miles distance to work on time, but I know, at 7:30 in the morning many other commuters have made the same mistake. Year after year this goes on. I could change jobs and move my family away from their community but whats the point. Everywhere has the same problems now. You cant take everything with you. Though one thing that sticks out in my minds eye is a beutiful English rose. A red rose. The countryside would not be the same. Wish your friend well and good luck to the break. |
