If you want to drive- come up on the A1, as far as the junction for York- take the A64 - continue until the turning for Pickering - signposted from there to Whitby.

funky munky is back
I do happen to know that the train will take you all the way up to Middlesborough and then come back down to Whitby, adding an extra 2 hours to your journey.
Best go by car straight up M1- M18 - A1- A19 - A64 - A169 - A171.

jenkin1950
You've had some really good answers (especially from Chopper) But I have travelled by car, by coach, by train. I am a senior citizen and nowadays I would just use the train. Coaches are cheap, but they take forever, and as for driving ... there is no pleasure in it anymore.
PS: Just an aside, I used to try to see as much of UK as I could when I was in my teens, and I used to hitch hike. But now I never see anyone doing this. Is it because it is so risky?

Up the A1, the A19, the A66, then the A171, either drive, bus or train. Its a fabulous journey with lots of beautiful scenery.

The train requires changing at least twice so is a bit tedious. The bus should be nice but slow with limited journey times.
It would be really nice to fly up to Tees Durham airport, then hire a car to drive the rest of the way (the scenic bit) Whitby is well signposted from the airport.

If you chose to drive all the way be careful, once you get onto the A171 which is at the end of the journey, its a lonely winding road over the moors, you do not want to do this in the dark, apart from missing its beauty it is famous for crashes and quite scary in places even in daylight, its a road where you need your wits about you, but it is beautiful.

If you are planning on coming soon i should warn you that its snowing on the A171 at the mo and occasionally they do close the road when the weather is bad.

Whitby is fantastic, if you havent been before you will fall in love with its charm, and its fish and chips!

train would be the best or you could try the bus

By train to York from London Kings Cross on National Express East Coast trains or Grand Central Trains which takes 2 hours and run frequently; then by express Yorkshire Coastliner bus from outside York Station. (There are trains to Whitby but they are very infrequent and you have to go much further north than York to catch them)
Advance purchase rail fares are the cheapest.
