Megabus, if you book far enough in advance you can get a seat for £1 each way.

Try a bike. Or walk. Both would be free.

Hitch-hike.

Hitchike.

You are here: X
Coach from Brighton - London Day return £10.80
train from London - Southend Day return £17.50
total £28.30

Anyway Brighton to Southend by train is only £29.50 according to the national rail enquiries website.

Walk or cycle but it might take rather longer. Try the bus National Express

National Express or Megabus, failing that hitch or get someone to give you a lift.

An incredible number of people here have suggested you walk.
Well, I've actually done it. And then I had to sleep for a whole day, so it's not really worth it as an economy measure.
Hitching: I used to hitch between Brighton and London when I was a student, but that was a long time ago and hitching doesn't seem to exist any more.

There are two different train services, one goes from Victoria, the other from London Bridge (and thence further north), with slightly different prices. You can sometimes get some good deals by booking well ahead on the web sites. Aslo book a through train, even if it involves changing. For example, the Virgin Trains web site recently quoted me 15.50 pounds single for Manchester to Brighton - very much cheaper than the sum of the individual fares.
Then, there is National Express

Take the train, and if you are a student use your student pass to get you even cheaper fares. I used to go between Brighton and Victoria Station in London all the time. Really not that expensive.

Cheapest way is to change your mind and not go.
