I'm a Yank who has visited England and Scotland and traveled around the UK a bit.
So far, without exception, everyone I've met there was pleasant and helpful to a foreign traveler stumbling his way through a different culture.

British people are open and have a sense of humour. They happily talk to strangers in a queue. They call you love and sweetheart. They will put themselves down before you do. They are enthusiastic about things in an innocent and charming way.
